If you check out the designs around here, you'll see they're generally symmetrical for the control room - also, speakers should be aimed at a point just behind your head, which point should form an equilateral triangle with the two speakers. Unless that hallway beside the CR goes somewhere, it seems like a super waste of space as well as an acoustic problem for the live room. Plane symmetry is used in CR's with good reason - you want both halves of your listening triangle to be equal, so you don't make panning/EQ decisions based on your room lying to you... Steve
Yeah the hallway goes to small kitchen and bathroom so it's gota stay, how will it mess with the acoustics of the live room and is there anything i can do to work around it. As for the CR how can i go about balancing out the sound as it's allready famed up. cheers for ya help. MD
Just build in an identical angle on the other side of the room, and shift your listening position to match it.
Kase caught the CR symmetry problem - the hallway, if left open, will act as a long resonant tube - without dimensions (all three axes, including height)I can't begin to guess what frequency it would resonate at. The fix, if the hallway isn't too narrow, would be to put absorbent on walls and ceiling and a door across the entrance to the hallway where the CR reaches its widest point - If you DONT put a good bottom seal on the door, the whole hallway will act as a deep bass trap to help smooth out the live room. This is why you'd need the absorbent on walls - the thicker the better, but anything is better than nothing. Also, the door across the hallway might be usable as a "tunable" trap - you would do this by "micro-adjusting" how much you leave the door ajar, then make spacers to hold the door at the best opening for trapping (these will be very small openings, increments as small as 1/8" or even smaller will change the result. Just a thought... Steve
Steve thanks heaps for the reply bud. OK here's a copy of my floor plan with dimensions. The whole studio is on a slab and im goin to float the CR floor. Im thinkin im just gona leave the live room concret, what do you think. As for the shape of the CR it's that way to give the live room more space. I don't really have enough room in the CR to make the other wall the same shape, do you think it's gona be majour problem ? With the hall way i was gona run a condensor mic up the end of it as a room mic when trackin drums and stuff to give it a bigger sound, but i guess by putting a door at the end i'll have more control over the sound of the live room. Ok the overall roof high is 260cm. Do you have any ideas as to where i should put bass traps and other acoustic treatment in the CR to give it a nice even sound. Cheers for all your help mate. MD

Yeah, that's going to mess with your stereo imaging in 2 ways... The angled wall on the right of the mixing position is going to reflect sound back at you differently than the 90 degree corner on the left, but the bigger problem is this: your listening position and speakers are quite a bit closer to the left wall than they are to the right wall (once you're past that angled wall). If you can't square off that right corner (easiest fix) you really should build an identical angled wall on the left side and just pull your speakers and listening position back from the wall far enough for them to fit.
What about something like this? The shaded regions would be areas that you could install bass traps, or amp racks in the walls...I'm not sure what the dimensions on this would be, I just took your image and drew some lines and then put the image back up (so for the most part it should still be to scale). Also, what would be the possibility of putting a door right at the entrance to the "live room" right where it meets the hallway?

cheers john these both look great hey. What are the brown area's in the CR and the Live room, are they bass traps ? I really think da first design could work well for me. Thanks heaps for da ideas mate. rock on hey Matt d
The Brown areas are Slat Resonators. Purpose: To provide an angled wall to deflect the/scatter the sound and keep the room as close to neutral as possible. Bryan Giles
