Hello! This is my first posting here after having run into this place after searching for info on building bass traps and the like. I must I've been inspired and have fashioned my own little floor plan for a simple studio. Tell me what you think. It's the general idea, layout, angles, not specific sizes. Anyways, hello! - Nels

That layout will work, depending on what you'll be recording. You sure don't have to worry about parallel surfaces. The only 2 things I can see about it (without any dimensions) are that 1 the kitchen/lounge area doesn't leave much apparent room to stand or sit around. Since you have double doors on each end, and the room isn't much wider than the doors, it makes the whole room feel like a corridor, and putting cabinets/refrigerators/couches/chairs in there will make it seem like you're just obstructing it. If you can make it a foot or two wider than the doors, it'd help a little bit, but having a single 3' wide door on each end- not in the middle of the wall, but near the corners- would make it seem more like a 'room' in it's own right. 2 that iso booth looks pretty big in comparison to everything else. Is that meant to be a drum booth? I'm usually recording rock bands, so the first thing in my mind is to make enough room in the main tracking room for everyone. I'd steal some of the space back from the booth and give it to tracking. Just thinking out loud. It's tough to really analyze a floor plan without knowing how big everything is going to be...
First, I agree with Kase's points. Second, what is the purpose of the iso booth? It looks large enough to hold a drum kit, as Kase wrote, but there is no visual contact between the booth and the main room.
Thanks guys, Yeah I need to adjust the demensions of the booth and the entry room. I'll probabaly just shift the control room over to make the booth smaller and entry bigger. But on this note, in your opinions would it be better to have a dedicated drum room or booth. I could reengineer to make the entry to able to double as a vocal booth.... Purpose of booth: Vocals maybe guitar amps or other. Purpose of entry: mainly to get stuff into the studio and for a microwave/coffee pot. I wasn't thinking a full on lounge. The studio would be across my driveway from the house so if real lounging is needed there's the rec room downstairs :). Also what are pros cons and opinions on sliding glass doors versus wood door and window combos? Would it be better to replace the control room main window witha sliding door?
I'd record drums in the main tracking room. They're the instrument that'll benefit the most from a bigger space. Amplifiers aren't claustrophobic. ;)
What about something more along the lines of...

That looks like it'll work. So how big is this place, anyway?
It's not a existing place but more an idea for the future if I feel like spending a buncha money and time. I'm imagining about 1000 sq feet? Somewhere round there... Edit: Busting out the trig and using an average control room width of 12 ft and length of 13.5 ft (1 in = 6ft), I get an area of about 880 sq ft for this drawing.
