Hi Guys, Firstly if this is in the wrong forum I apologise, I wasn't sure whether to post it here of in the acoustics forum, looking at some other posts here I felt that it was probably best posted here. Secondly let me introduce myself, I'm Aaron. I've always had a pretty keen interest in room acoustics and as such I've been a long time prowler of these forums. I've recently been given the opportunity convert a disused space in a friends building though into a studio space, and the room is definitely going to need acoustic treatment to be useful for my needs, at the moment it's terribly effective as an echo chamber but not much else. Anyway, I thought I'd jump on here and see if you guys wouldn't mind giving me some advice on things I can do to improve the sound of the room. I'm pretty much a total noob when it comes to studio design, this will be the first time I've had a studio that doesn't have a bed in it. With that said though, I've read through a lot of posts on the forum and I've been making music in bedrooms for a long time now so I have a reasonable commonsense understanding of how the dynamics of a space can affect room acoustics. I've attached photos, sketchup drawings and tried to provide as much info as I possibly can. I'll post more photos as I progress and as they're requested. Here is a basic sketch up drawing so you can get an idea of the size of the space:

Location: Sydney, Australia. Within 15 mins from CBD. Budget: Up to $1000 AUD. Could potentially go further if necessary, but would prefer to keep it around or below that. The purpose of the space: I plan to use the space primarily for two purposes: making electronic music in stereo and making surround (5.1) sound art/installation projects. I don't plan to record vocals or acoustic instruments. What I hope to achieve: I want a space that creates a playback and monitoring environment that is as accurate as achievable on my budget. I want a room that is a pleasure to go and write music in, and work on sound-art projects in. I want a room in which I can make mixes that will translate to other non controlled listening environments. I of course understand that I will have to get to know the room and will have to get to know my speakers again within the room, but I want this to be as easy as possible without having the dynamics of the room throwing mixes off completely. Neighbours The building is basically in an industrial estate so bleed really isn't too much of an issue. Slight industrial noise coming in may be but I don't plan to record acoustically so I'm not too worried about it. The existing room Here's some photos of the room before it was cleaned out and had the doors replaced:

The room is 3300 wide x 5110 Long x 3220 high. The walls are brick, rendered in cement with wall paper over them. The floor is unpolished floor boards. The room is not on the ground floor of the Building I can make cosmetic changes to the room, and can drill into the walls to hang stuff, but cannot change the structure of the room or position of walls. I can drill into ceiling rafters to hang ceiling baffling. However there is a sprinkler system installed in the roof that I cannot interfere with:

There are 3 areas where the walls aren't flush: - 1. The door with the glass panels, which can be seen in the attached images, is offset the depth of the wall. This door leads to the outside of the building. For security this door is being replaced with a solid core door and the window above is being boarded up. However access to the outside through this door is non-essential so if need be the space in-front of the door can be sealed up, or filled with acoustic treatment. EDIT: The builder has since installed the door and boarded the window above, he left the original door and placed the new solid core door on the inside, he also did the same when boarding up the window. I'll take a photo this weekend to show.

- 2. Just next to the entrance to the studio there is a brick pylon that goes from the floor to the ceiling, I'll take photos and measure this when I'm in the space on the weekend. I would estimate that it's 40cm wide and protrudes from the wall by about 10 cm.

- 3. There are two windows that face the outside of the building which can not be boarded up. But I can, and intend to, place heavy curtains over them. Both doors are being replaced with solid core doors & both windows above the doors are being boarded up. Equipment My studio basically consists of a 27inch imac, 5 x Yamaha HS50M's, a HS10w sub, Motu 828mkIII and a bunch of outboard synths and drum machines. I would like to wall mount the rear speakers. This is a very rough placement of how I'm thinking might be the best way to go about desk positioning:

EDIT I've had some more time to read as much more of the forum posts as I can and have come up with some draft sketches of what I think is going to improve the acoustic of the room. (I may be completely wrong, but hopefully you guys can guide me forward...)

This is my guess or estimation at what I'm going to need: Broadband absorbers on the back wall. Heavy curtains on the windows. Superchunk bass traps in the front corners. Clouds above the mixing position Boradband absorbers on the side walls. Questions: 1. Am I on the right track? 2. Are my broadband absorbers roughly in the right spot? And where should they be? 3. What size should each broadband absorber be? 4. What is the latest recommendation on the type of insulation material used for broadband absorbers, Superchunk Bass Traps & Ceiling Clouds? Still Insulco Fat Batts? What specs? Where's the best place to buy in Sydney, Australia (preferably closer to CBD or South of Sydney)? 5. How should I design cloud absorbers for the ceiling? Can someone point me to a good post in the forum where this has already been done for a similar room or to a similar effectiveness? Should I have one cloud or break them up? Should the cloud above the mix position be on an angle? Is that angle 12 degrees? 6. What Material should the curtains be made out of? 7. I have 45cm between the right wall and the door at the front of the room, meaning a 45x45x63.6cm bass trap would fit there perfectly. Would this size trap be effective? 8. Where should my center speaker be placed? I use a single screen so I can't place it dead center at the same height as the R&L is this a common problem? How is it commonly overcome? 9. Where should my sub go? So yeah that's where I'm at, just starting out. I hope I've provided enough information. I really appreciate the effort you guys go to in this forum and the passion you all have. Any advice as I proceed would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Aaron.
