a quicky 3D template you can size for a given room and it let's you view the mode spacing and main frequency on a given axis. due to the way the nesting of components works in SU dynamic components, it may run for a while (each time you adjust something). one option is to set it "No" for "showing 3D", size it for the floor (x-y axis) using the scale tool, then set it to 3D and size it vertically (z-axis). cheers! use this link from the 3D warehouse as the file is about 1.8MB. http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/ ... 9309166000 attached is a simple help file.

It looks fascinating, Glenn, but for some reason I'm not seeing the component you mention in the instructions. The components window only shows "Mode Template" then "Mode Template#1" through to "Mode Template#9", but I can't see any "Mode Template 3D". There's a "mode_template_3D" in the outliner, but it can't be selected. What am I doing wrong? - Stuart -
me too Stuart - I'm not sure what Glenn means when he says select 3D mode Template - the component options window comes up blank.
I think I got it ... After you load in the SU file .... Right Click on the object, and go down to the bottom sub-menu and select 'Component Options'. That brings up the 'Mode Template 3D. Note: I'm running SU version 8
Nup - that doesn't work for me - I don't get that option on right click.
hmmm :? Do you have the 'Dynamic Component' sub-menu when you 'Right Click' on the selected, [highlighted], object ???
Right Click on the object, and go down to the bottom sub-menu and select 'Component Options'.
Which "object"? There are about a dozen components. There are no options for any of them. But far worse than that, and it seems to be related, SketchUp now seems to be hosed!! Every time I try to save a large model I was working just fine before I loaded Glenn's model, it now sits there and hangs for a couple of minutes creating a file called "1.skb", which it never did before. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix that? I've tried everything, including purging the model, loading a backup from a few days ago, resetting the system, etc. Still the same. This phantom "1.skb" appears every time I save something, and it takes forever to do it. Looks like I'll be uninstalling and re-installing SketchUp. - Stuart -
I haven't had that problem Stuart and I'm saving 25meg files OK.
What version are you using, John? I'm on 8.0.4811, which is supposed to be the latest. My file is about 10 meg, but I just tried with a couple of others, in the range 3 to 7 neg, and same result: Veeeeerrrrrry slow save. It seems to be ever since I tried out Glenn's dynamic model, this strange behavior has appeared. Maybe just coincidence, but I have not changed anything else on the system. Researching it on Google, it turns out that files named "0.skb", "1.skb" "2.skb" etc. are internally generated backup files, created by the automatic or timed backup feature. Fine... except that I just turned both of these features OFF, and STILL get this! So it is creating backup files even though I tell it not to, and it seems to be doing more than just saving them, as it just takes so long. It's like it is calculating something while it saves. Annoying... It happens with all models now, not just big ones: it's just faster on smaller models, so less noticeable. But big ones take forever to save now. That 10 meg one is taking close to two minutes, every time I hit "Save" or "Save as". OK, a 10 meg file can take a few seconds to save: I'm used to that. But NOT two minutes! Can't figure it out yet.... Grrrrrrrrr.......
Wow! - that's strange Stuart - I'm on the latest version like you but I've had no problems, just can't get Glenn's program to work.
Stuart - unless you somehow added this component to all your files, i'm not sure it could be the cause - it's self-contained and local only to the file you load it into. make sure you didn't save it into a template you use the internal working is there is a group which is the horizontal grid which is then copied vertically along the same algorithm as the flat one. (i updated it to use a group so it's faster and smaller now). i may ultimately have to re-do this as a Ruby script to make it more compact but that will have to wait until i have time. here's an SU file which has the component in it. you might have to enable dynamic components in the tools settings. (sorry for the size - i zipped it as it's 625Kb) note: i downloaded it from the 3D WH and dragged it onto a blank SU file and it worked (have to answer the delay dialog). also, if you do not see the dynamic component options in the context, use the view -> toolbars to view the dynamic component toolbar. i found a bug in SU 8 which sometimes prevents the context menu from displaying and reported it.

once you load the component into your file, click on it to select it, then you should see the attributes in the dynamic component options window. let me know if you're still seeing that...
Still don't know what happened, but I re-installed SketchUp and things are back to normal now. Something got screwed up, somewhere!
once you load the component into your file, click on it to select it,
Which component? That's the question. But I finally figured it out: this is NOT a stand-alone SKP file, even though it looks like one: You HAVE to import it into an existing model in order for it to work. If you just try to open it as an SKP, it looks like everything is there, but actually it isn't, and doesn't work. It ends up as a whole bunch of individual components, without the one that you need. I have no idea why that it is, but try it and you'll see. But if you open your model, then IMPORT this into it, it works as advertised. Cool! :) Thanks, Glenn! - Stuart -
Hi Stuart, owww ... didn't realize that ... What I originally did was 'drag' the file into Sketch-up. It seemed to work. I do understand from reading Glenn's notes that this particular file seemed to be designed to place 'within' a room design [resize to fit as needed]. I'm going to play with this more, as I'm trying to learn more about all this stuff
