Hi ive just moved into a new flat and need some help on where i should place my studio setup. should i place it in front of the window and the double bed goes to the far wall near the door, or should i place it on the opposite side near the door. my thinking was ot put it in front of the window as i can use bass traps in both corners , if i have it on the otherside the door is there and i cant get a thick bass trap there. now i dont know what im talking about and thats why im asking the experts!!! also can you tell me where to put basstraps difusors ect in the room at the moment i have it in the middle of the 12ft wall near the door and the bass is ridiculous ive had to use the eq settings on my monitors and apply bass cuts. the kick drum is booming all over the place!!! So i really need to get this acoustic treatment started asap find attached my sketchup really appreciate any help thanks guys

Hi "cars111", and welcome! One question: What is the thing marked "wall" on that diagram, that sticks out partly into the room? Maybe you could post some photos of the room, to get a better idea of what you are dealing with. Normally, you want the speakers firing down the longest axis of the room, not across the short dimension, but if you did that in your room it looks like that "wall" thing would be messing up your room symmetry, which is even more critical. You also don't mention how high the ceiling is, and we'd need that in order to figure the modal response of your room, to see where your issues are.
also can you tell me where to put basstraps difusors ect in the room
I'm not sure what you mean by a "basstrap diffuser", since you cannot diffuse bass with any reasonable size device: you can only trap it, either broadband or tuned. Maybe there was a comma missing there, and you meant to say "can you tell me where to put basstraps, difusors, etc."? Anyway, the room is too small for most types of diffuser to be useful. Diffusers are great in large rooms, not so great in small rooms (despite what you might read on the web sites of companies that manufacture diffusers... but that's not surprising! :) ). Must diffusers create "lobing", which needs lots of space to even out again. Small rooms don't have "lots of space". But small rooms DO need bass trapping, and LOTS of it. Bass traps for a small room like that need to be LARGE, and need to go in as many corners of the room as you can get them in. The "sperchunk" design is a proven, economical, easy-to-build design that works really well. Try to get those in at least 2 or three of the vertical corners, and hopefully some of the horizontal ones as well.
at the moment i have it in the middle of the 12ft wall near the door and the bass is ridiculous
What is the "it" that you have there? Sounds like it can't be very big, and like there is only one of "it", which is very far short of what you need for a small room like that. That's why your bass is "ridiculous": lack of bass trapping. :)
ive had to use the eq settings on my monitors and apply bass cuts.
You cannot use EQ to "fix" the modal response issues with your room. At best you can slightly adjust things for one specific location in the room, but since modal response is a time-domain problem, and equalizers are frequency domain solutions, it is impossible to fix room modes with EQ, in the exact same way that you cannot stop a leaky tap by wiping away just one drop... Modal issues can only be dealt with using acoustic treatment. Anyway, post some photos of your room, tell us about that "wall" thingy, the type of bass trap you have right now, and also the height of the ceiling. - Stuart -
hi thanks for the reply the "wall" part of my diagram is a part of the wall sticking out into the main room. so it is an obstical!!! i think the height of the ceilings are roughly 9-10ft there quite high.
at the moment i have it in the middle of the 12ft wall near the door and the bass is ridiculous
the "it" is the monitors , mac , table ect. sorry i meant absorbers and basstraps. i need to know where the best place will be in the room for them. also where should i set up the control roommac, monitors, table ect , in front ofthe window or in front of the 12 ft wall opposite side to the window. will the sticking out wall be a problem? i realise eqing is silly , and i hopefully will change the settings back to flat on my dynaudios once the acoustic treatments are in place! ps the wife would love you to say in fornt of the window as she hates seeing the desk and equipment when she passess the rooom hahahhaha but she will have to lump it if not!
can anyone help? thanks
hi really need some help on what side of the room i should place the speakers , mac ect . and where to place the superchunks , absorbers thanks and what version of the knauf insulation is best to use in the basstraps and absorbers im based in the uk thanks a lot
Like I said: post some photos of the room! Without that, we have no idea of what you are dealing with. - Stuart -
