Hello everyone, thanks for your comments and suggestions regarding my other posthttp://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=16521. I really appreciate it.
I am moving forward with a somewhat mixed approach. Part of my studio structure will be modular, part will be more permanent. Interested in building a modular front wall, and this leads me to a few questions. When placing a speaker in a soffit- How high from the floor should the bottom edge of the speaker be? Should the speaker be centered from left to right in the soffit?
Thanks so much for any information.
Best,
Rogers
Speaker placement in modular soffit...?

Hi Rogers. It's probably better to keep all the posts about your build in the same thread, to not lose continuity.
The rule is that the acoustic axis of the speakers should be 1.2 meters above the floor, which is ear height for most people when seated. If you happen to be very tall or very short, or like to have a high seat, low seat, or work standing up, etc., then adjust the height of the speakers accordingly to your own ear hieght, but for most people 1.2 m is the correct height. Note: that is the height of the ACOUSTIC AXIS of the speaker, not the top or bottom of the speaker cabinet. Check your speaker manual to see if the manufacturer shows where that is.How high from the floor should the bottom edge of the speaker be?
If possible, yes. The concept of a soffit is that it tries to emulate an infinite baffle, which basically means a front panel on the speaker that is very large in all direction with respect to the wavelengths of sounds being emitted by the speaker. So in a perfect theoretical world, the soffit panel would be a perfect circle about 34 m in diameter (17m radius, one full wave of a 20 Hz sound). Of course, reality is rather different! Just try to get as much solid, hard, massive surface as you can around your speaker, roughly the same on each side, top and bottom. If you can get 48 inches, that's great. If not, then just get as much as you can: anything more than a few inches wide is better than the original cabinet of the speaker itself! - Stuart -Should the speaker be centered from left to right in the soffit?
