Hey all, been lurking for a while but I need some specific feedback at this point. Thanks in advance! I am heading towards a small studio, 2 rooms, a control room upstairs and a recording space downstairs. 6Lx4Wx4.5H metres, standard rectangle, no funny angles, just with a stair case at one end Big focus on soundproofing, as this is in a church, and we need to be able to use the studio while many other things are happening in the building. (not during sunday morning service with bass guitar!) One tricky element will be having a room above a room. The floor between will be difficult to isolate. My main problem I want to get help on here though, is a monitoring issue. I have bought the PMC TB2's 10 months ago, as I love their sound. However they require a metre space behind them between them and the wall for best results as they are rear ported, and because they are just a bit fussy. So I will be losing a metres space in the room essentially. Also they are best utilised if you can sit 1.5 to 2 metres back from them, and in a 6 metre long room, this puts me in dead centre in the middle of the room at the 3 point mark, not ideal for room modes. Any advice?
so both rooms are only 2.25m H? or each one is 4.5m H? how is the existing building constructed? it might be the most isolation is needed for the live room and only a bit for the control room - depending on how loud you mix. i'm somewhat surprised a 6" LF driver speaker like the TB2 would require a 1m or more stand off, maybe putting it closer to the wall and setting the cut-over to compensate will make things right? if not, the having a large front bass trapping and some other things to shift modes around will suffice to make the room work. are you doing 5.1 or just 2 channel?
HI there, thanks for answering. The top room, will have a ceiling of a height we choose, anywhere up to 5 metres. the bottom room will have a low ceiling, 2.5 metres. The top room at this point is destined to be the mix room, downstairs for recording. It is currently made of triple brick, and plasterboard. we will be using standard approaches for building walls with mass, (plasterboard), green glue, room inside a room if we can afford it. I will just be doing 2 channel sound. there is no lf cutoff on these monitors or their amp. 1/2 a metre may well work! I guess I need to just try it. I have not got experience with the results of bass trapping the front of the room, will it move where the modes sit will it? I am thinking that the staircase will be best moved to sit behind the monitors to utilise the 1 metre recommended gap between monitors and wall, does anyone have any designs of any setups like this? or can foresee any problems with it? cheers all
