Can anyone describe to me what psychoacoustics is, in a way that i wont need a PHD to read it!! Thanks John
the simplest? probably the difference between what you think you hear and what is actually done with the sound transducers electronically/physically to create the effect. i'm a big fan of Bose 901 speakers - something created in the early 60's at MIT to take advantage of reflections and mid-range to create the effect of a wide sound stage and nearly full frequency response (caveat: "no high, no lows, must be Bose") but the addition of a proper crossover, subs, and wide dispersion horns, the effect is actually indescribable... otherwise, as a start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychoacoustics
Psychoacoustics is the study of the effect of the human auditory system and brain as relates to acoustics. It is the attempt to understand how (perhaps why) our brain interprets the sounds we hear in the manner it does. In the sense of the design of acoustically pleasing (more importantly - critical listening) spaces, it is the application of the principles we have developed (from those studies), to produce physically measurable results.
