Hello, Im fairly new to forums and such, just wanted to get some help on treating my control room, live room and ISO booth. I have a good idea on how to make acoustic panels (absorbers) but not too sure on the correct placement and also which type of treatment (reflectors, diffusers etc) to use. I guess trial and error would be a good start which i will do this weekend with 2 panels I have already made (simple wooden frame 10cm deep, with 4cm rockwool sheet), but any advice/guidence would be greatly appriciated. This is an on going project studio mainly for personal use. But i do get young bands and friends of friends that i record (paid recordings), and would like to expand into more paid gigs and voice over work for web and media (my day job is graphic design). Sound isolation isnt a problem (double brick walls on the outside, double walls dividng control and live room). Its a double garage (5.5m x 5.5m, 2.5m floating ceiling) with laminate wooden flooring and gyprock (plasterboard) walls. The inside double walls have gold batts insulation (prolbaly not the best but was on a budget and was young at the time). The studio is also on ground lvl, its all one level with NO floating floor. Ive attached a layout diagram of the room, i've marked where my desk and listening positions are, and also where i mic up a drumkit and guitar/bass cabs. SO in overview: Ideal placements of acoustic panels in live room (sounds a little too live, having trouble controling cymbals in the mix as they seem to overpower the kit. im sure its relections coming back to the mic from somewhere.) Ideal placements of acoustic panels in control room, overpowering bass seems to be an issue as well as booming bass in certain areas. Ideal placements of acoustic panels in ISO booth, currently a storage space so its just gyprock walls with wooden floor. Looking for nice controled sound for a general vocal/guitar ISO booth. My budget is up to $500, but i can go as high as $1,000 if need be. Cheers all for your help and sorry if this post is too long or has too much useless info. :P steve

welcome! in the control room, you want to treat any reflection points which interfere with your mix position. this includes the floor, ceiling, side walls, and back walls. typically in the back corner of the room you depicted, you would span that corner with a large trap. its probably too small to benefit from a numeric diffuser but could possibly use a poly on the face of the trap to help. in the isolation room - treat surfaces which could result in comb filtering into the mic. ceilings are pesky that way as well as the floor. in the live room, using a scattering of absorption on the walls and ceiling will help you to incrementally add absorption to the space without making it dead. depending on the ceiling height, this should be the first placement for absorbers over the drum kit.
Hey cheers for the reply! Thanks for the advice, was exactly what i was looking for  I'll try placing the panels this weekend and i'll let you guys know how it goes, and i will post some pics too!
