Hi everyone, first of all I have to say, it's a really great forum and very stunning what all the people around here are building. I am musician for a long time and I do recordings since 6 years. Most of them in the rehearsal room of our band and drum recordings in special studios.. now i have my own rooms, and one of them should become the recordings room. The most important part for recording is the drumset. I need a tight and smacky sound. My room is 4,64 m * 3,86 m * 3,90 m (l,w,h). It has a very high ceiling as you can see. 3,90m. The controllroom will be next to it in the next room. I've marked the position for the window with red in the sketch. Another special thing is the big window wall on the side of the door, as well as two other windows in the room. The sketches aren't the best, i know, but i wasn't able to create better ones. I used the IKEA kitchen planer on their homepage. hopefully it's good enough... So my questions are: What floor would you prefer? Where shall I put the drumset? How can I optimize the acoustic for recordings? Maybe you could give me some tips...

Hi Christian. 1 offtopic question: Are you from Frankfurt? I know your Name from somewhere, and i remember of a Dj with this name. I´m from Frankfurt... cheers Mika
Hi, no I live nearby Oberhausen.... Nice to meet some german people around here :)
a nice concrete floor would be a good start. all of the room treatments including the ceiling should be hard so the space is very lively but very diffusive.
Okay, the floor will be a concrete floor. I thought I had to put some wood above because of the reflections, but if u say concrete is better i'll save money :) The ceiling has some kind of tiling, i don't know the correct word for it in english... the material of the plates is styrofoam/wood mixture I think... Do I have to put Absorbers in the corners and on the walls? One thing I don't really know yet is the need for soundproofing the room. I own one half of this building, an the recording room is the farest form the neighbours. between it and the nieghbour there are two more rooms and a thick wall, but i have no idea how much sound will come to them... maybe i habe to put the drumset on an extra plate wich has no connection to the floor?
if you are trying to isolate a drum kit from your neighbors - concentrate on getting the isolation correct first and then work on the treatments. yes you would want to treat the corners of the room plus likely need a cloud overhead plus the first reflection points treated. one advantage of polishing and staining the concrete floor is if you decide you want to add a layer of wood, it's easy to do, but you might find the concrete works. you could build a drum platform to help isolate some of the kit from transferring through the floor but drums tend to be very loud and isolation is a lot of work.
