Hi everyone.I want to Build a room to mix in.I dont need to soundproof it i just want to have good acoustics.I produce mainly hip-hop so i think i will need good bastrapping.I would like to soffitmount my speakers and i`ve read alot about acoustics and looked at a lot of designs on this page but i dont know if my room is to small to realize this.Im not quite sure about the angles or if i need to slant my speakers.I read somthing about 30 degrees for speakerplacement based on the bbc studio designs. The room is in a basement and has a Glassdoor at rear wich i will not be able to seal so i thought about placing a mobile diffusor infront of it and superchunk basstraps in the rear corners .I work with the metric system and my room is L=4,68m W=3,19 H=2,47 m I open for your suggestions and would appreciate all the help i can get.

maybe like this?

Hey gullfo, couple of questions. Got any elevations of the rear wall? Are those hangers in the rear wall corners and or are they Slat/slot walls? And also, can you give a simple description of the QRD too. fitZ
Thanks for your reply gulfo.Yes that is pretty much what i am thinking of.I think i would have to be the other way around because of the glassdoor and I would only have to monitors.I think i will get the Krk vxt8 monitors. Here is another picture so you can get a better impression i forgot to mention the heater near the back.So how will i have to slant my speakers at an angle towards me because of my roomheight of 2,47 meters? And should i go with normal absorbers or helmholtz resonators. Are the ratio in the picture from my room or just an example?

i would keep the radiator in the back of the room to avoid issues with heat and put it under a small soffit for the back wall absorber on that side. and perhaps have an inner window on the back wall plus heavy drapes when mixing.

:D Thanks alot for your help.I really like this design.Does slats stand for slatresonators in the front of the room or for the woodslats to construct the framing or am i getting mixedup with slotresonators? How would i treat my ceiling?with a cloud?Would it be smart to change the door opening to left.Should i use acoustic hangers beneath the speakers or just fill it with insulation.I would like to start construction within the next 2 weeks do you think you could give me a rough estimate for the materialcosts? I think i will be able to spend about 2000 - 4000 euros. Sorry for all my questions just trying to understand things better and learn. Thanx fo your patience.
slats is my shortcut for slat resonators (slot resonators). if you have room for hangers that would be good, if not, a layer of rigid insulation behind the cloth and then pink insulation to fill. yes, a cloud would be used on the ceiling along with some other absorbers overhead plus possible some absorbers to hang over the window when mixing. if you can hinge to door to make access better then do so, it not its one of many compromises... as far as costs - the back window might be costly especially if you have to have it operable. maybe a much smaller window would work there? the cloth will cost some as will rigid insulation. but if you're not doing isolation work, then you should be able to afford the framing, absorption, and slats on your budget.
Ive talked to my partner and we both aggreed on closing the rear Wall so there wont be any need for an inner Window. So would it be better to have an absorbative rear Wall or should i use the space to integrate a diffusor?I think i have enough space for hangers. What can i do to be able to reach the radiator to adjust the temperature if it is built into a soffit?maybe some kind of access or just leave it turned of becuase i have enough insulation to keep the room warm? How do i determine what spacing my slatresonators will need?should i do acoustic roommeasurements?Could you send me a 3d woodframing construction model including the spacing and angles ?.I havent worked with sketchup yet and dont know how fast i can learn to work with it but i will give a try.
I tried to tranfer your design into my room.I think the angles of the speakersoffits are not correct.I added a cloud how i think i might be shaped. I dont know if it has to be slanted or if i need anotherone.

help :(
I still have so many questions can someone help me out? What is rigid insulation in europe rockwool (mineralwool)or fiber glass the yellow stuff?Do i need What kind of insulation do i need to place where? What thickness do i need? How much wood and what thickness?
you might have to adjust the front wall a bit to get the soffits sized - its all about balancing the console you have, the monitors you have, the room size to achieve a space where you can fit the console into the right location to have the monitors focus on you correctly plus have the soffits size appropriately for the monitors - as a quick rule, 3 x LF driver radius on each side of the speaker center line - so a 12" woofer needs minimally 3' wide soffits as reasonable minimum size. so if you have a 6' wide console and you need to be @ 42% back from your isolation wall where your initial design said you only have 5', then something has to give - soffit width? console choice? monitors? sidewall treatments? for least evil, i'd choose the side wall treatments as my first compromise, then perhaps soffit angles, go from 30° to say 22.5° etc etc this is why it's critical to understand the equipment and options you might still not have made - so maybe you decide that the 48 channel board will suffice instead of the 96 channel, etc or instead of the Genelec 1037c you get the JBL 63xx monitors etc
Thanks for your reply Glenn. im still not using sketchup.I had a few problems figuring out how to get the right angles in the software im using now i finally managed and started again from scratch and used 30° angles .I want to use Krk VXT 8 speakers.Im not going to use a console only my Daw.So how does the rule for the soffit size apply for these speakers?3x the 8 woofersize on each side?I need to know it in centimeters or meters.im still not sure what to do with the rear wall since i dont need to have a window and can completley close it.Can you import other formats into sketchup? What type of files?Maybe my software is compatible so you could take a look at it. thank you for your help.
So 8 inches equals 20.3 cm and i need that 3 times on each side of the speaker center line correct?that would be a soffit width of at least 121,8 cm correct? Andrew
im confused with inches and feet. :|

for your setup/speaker: speaker: 8" (that's the diameter not the radius) the radius is 4". three times (minimum) on each side -> 3x4" on the left plus 3x4" on the right side of the speaker center line = 6x4" = 24" 24" (or 2' ) are in metric ~61cm hope that helps? greetings, carsten
Thanks Carsten (Danke schön) :D That really did help me in understanding. greetings Andrew

A great conversion site is http://www.convert-me.com/en/ Even converts to cubits - especially handy if you want a studio in biblical proportions :D ... Build unto thee a studio, the length thereof shall be 20 cubits ...
plus have the soffits size appropriately for the monitors - as a quick rule, 3 x LF driver radius on each side of the speaker center line - so a 12" woofer needs minimally 3' wide soffits as reasonable minimum size.
Glenn, I've seen that rule of thumb before, and it seems to work, but do you happen to recall where you got it from? I'd love to understand the math behind it. Got any links? - Stuart -
I'll have to find it but it may just be a "starting point" more than a "rule"... there is a lot of baffle step compensation information all center on the magic 4560 number. here's what I think Thomas had originally linked to for understanding this phenomena http://www.quarter-wave.com/General/BSC_Sizing.pdf i need to do some more searching as this may be something from Jeff Cooper...
Hey everyone thanks for your help so far. I was quite busy the last few weeks and couldnt focus on my project now im back at it.I finally managed to do a ruff draft with sketchup. I did some research about the 38% rule and used about 40% for my design.Im not finished with my rear wall yet.I dont know how to get enough space for hangers in the middle section between the soffits without moving to far back from my isolation wall.Is it necessary to have hangers in middle section?I dont know how to do raytracing to find first reflections. Any help is appreciated.
