:?: hello there again. yes i have rod's book and i have done a search on this site but i am not finding answers to my exact question so any help would be appreciated. i am building a room within a room in my 2 car garage in la. there will be storage at the front of my garage - so there will be 4 feet of space between the garage door and my new construction. the garage door needs to be able to open as i am only renting but it is paper thin. the rule i know in an existing space is to beef up existing walls before building the new construction so what would you all suggest for beefing up this particular type of garage door? thank you!!

A typical garage door needs 8 feet of track space to open a 7 foot door...there is no modification you can do to this door short of some damping...adding mass is not part of your reality.
it doesn't have typical tracks hanging from the ceiling and it only needs 3 feet of clearance to open.
I'll give you that...it opens left to right...not top to bottom:0
Same thin applies...you cannot modify it, there is not much you can do to it to isolate (read : sound proof) this hole.
You have to be free to construct things in order to develop a well isolated environment..it is what i is:)
what about a dreaded triple leaf construction? if i got permission to have it not openable i could build a wall right in front of the cheap garage door and then keep my 4 feet of space between my wall that is directly in front of the garage door and the wall for the actual room within a room.
??
That should work fine. Triple leaf with one of the gaps being 4 feet and one leaf being low mass sounds an awful lot better than trying to beef up that door enough. A 4 foot air space is definitely going to help that 3-leaf. Just try to put plenty of mass on the other two leaves, and maybe damp the door itself a bit, if necessary. - Stuart -what about a dreaded triple leaf construction? if i got permission to have it not openable i could build a wall right in front of the cheap garage door and then keep my 4 feet of space between my wall that is directly in front of the garage door and the wall for the actual room within a room.
thanks alot stuart
Bad idea. Lets look at the garage door as being invisible. Building a wall in front of it is not an answer, only more cost with less results. If you are doing a room-in-a-room, establish where that is and where that footprint will be and develop a decoupled two framed assembly...never mind the wall in front of the garage door...it's not helping. But then again...we need more information, the ceiling/roof...these things have to be fleshed out as a unit not as "some parts may not be included"...since they are all included.what about a dreaded triple leaf construction? if i got permission to have it not openable i could build a wall right in front of the cheap garage door and then keep my 4 feet of space between my wall that is directly in front of the garage door and the wall for the actual room within a room. ??
