I bookmarked this website 3 years ago thinking, “this website might help me in the future”. I guess I’m right! Hi everyone! My name is Herman from Sabah Malaysia or people call it Borneo where the mount kinabalu is. Like the others, this is my first time posting. First of all I apologize for my poor English and lack of knowledge on studio construction. I decided to upgrade my bedroom studio. I basically wanted to treat my acoustic. I wanted a control room and vocal booth, that’s it. Mostly my projects are Hip hop, church, solo artist, and acoustic guitar. No drum needed coz I have neighbor 360° and I am not planning to bleed my neighbor’s ear. Like most people, budget is my enemy and if you know, here we don’t have 50% of the material you guys used in studio construction. For example; Rockwool (the yellow square thing) is nowhere to be found here at my location. I can only find one place where they sell roxul (rolled with 5m long) around $30 per roll. (I guess it’s the same thing with Rockwool) My budget will be around USD500.

Here is my floor plan. My rooms are at the upper floor of my house. The doted line is the beam on the ceiling. RED is concrete, GREEN is wood and YELLOW is sliding window. I’m thinking to cover both windows with drywall so I can reduce the sound coming in to my rooms. BROWN is metal roof for my ground floor’s kitchen. I have one problem with the metal roof. I can’t have a vocal recording session whenever it is raining because it’s really loud. So I probably need to float the vocal booth. http://hotfile.com/dl/100886581/ab81111/studio_design.skp.html (sorry for the link, file is quite big) Here is my idea for the studio. Now you can see the beam on the ceiling. Basically I am planning to put up insulation on pretty much every corner of both rooms. I wanted to make the vocal booth smaller so that I can have room for my desk and my clients. My questions:- 1. How to air my vocal booth? - I only have 1 normal home air-con (I’m throwing the one from bedroom 1). How to customize my consumer air-con so that I can ventilate my vocal booth and also my control room? 2. How thick should my panel be? - 2", 4", 6"? If multiple thickness, where do I put which thickness? - Is my panel enough or too much? 3. I want to build my own custom studio desk. How to attach the arm rest (with cushion) to the desk? I am still open for new ideas. We can discus it from the scratch. I am willing to save up for couple more months before I start renovate. I apologize if I make any mistake on my writing and if it sounds offensive or anything. P/S: sorry for the huge file. Thank you very much. Regards, Mern
welcome! yes the roxul should work. on the AC - maybe create a closet where you can have the cool air from the AC ducted into the CR and the booth? you might make the AC closet your machine room/storage as well?
Thank you for the ideas Glenn. Any idea for my panel and arm rest? how about my rooms, any idea? Thank you.

you'll want more clouds overhead.
Thanks Glenn. I hide it for these pictures so you can see. Is it OK to put my desk on that corner? any better idea? How thick do you suggest for my panel? I will appreciate you help Glenn. Thanks, Herman
the corner isn't the best place - it would be best to be centered between the walls on each side to ensure symmetry but it also appears you're trying to do that with the treatments boxing in the mix desk.
Thank you very much glenn :D
