Hi,
Im looking for some help deciding if I should make a false ceiling in my control room, the reason Im thinking about it is because the ceiling is the exact same height as the width of the back wall but not the front wall. the dimensions are: L 4m, W (Front wall)3m W (Back wall)3.3m, H 3.3m. And the added thermal/acoustic insulation will be a welcome bonus.( this is the weakest link in the room as the walls are 60cm thick and solid).
I was thinking of a suspended ceiling made of 2 layers of plasterboard with 5cm of rockwool above.
I was thinking of having a finished height of 2.7m.
Any ideas of what would be a good height for this size room.
Any help is really appreciated, if a drawing is needed I will make one asap!

Definitely!
Wow, another clear question with a clear, concise, complete, answer!
Andres' succinctednessilliess, i have to agree. that said, a room height of 2.8m works out reasonably good from a calculation perspective although i'd be inclined to use the as much of the full 3.3m height (use the isolation walls to support the ceiling or suspend it) and build a lower false ceiling @ 2.8m and trap that space with a series of hangers.Definitely!
Hi gullfo,
Thanks for the response!
So, make the false ceiling with plasterboard but put up some hangers in the void that is created between it and the existing ceiling? With a finished height of 2.80m?
Thanks!
Carlos
Carlos, just build a cloud that has a solid back (top) and absorption on the front.(Bottom) Hang it over your mix spot. The solid back(top) will break up the floor to ceiling parallels and the exposed insulation will tighten your soundstage.
Hi John,
I do have a 1.75mx1.5m cloud above my mix spot and 2- 1.2mx0.6m panels hanging from the ceiling at the back of the room, all three are fabric wrapped rockwool pannels 5cm or 2" thick. I might screw some mdf to the back of them, how thick? 8mm, 12mm?
I am realy quite happy with the acoustics of my place, what I really need is better soundproofing and thermal insulation as the ceiling is made of concrete beams and brick in between, I can hear the rain hitting the terrace above and it gets very hot in the summer and cold in the winter!
How about some RFZ channels mounted directly to the ceiling with rockwool in between and a couple layers plasterboard?
Carlos
you could use RC-2 or isolation clips and hat channel/furring strips to mount the drywall on. consider using green glue between the drywall layers to improve the isolation at the mid and upper range and mostly fill that cavity with light insulation (pink yellow etc). i'd add the isolation at the highest level and then using a false ceiling or simply using the clouds to shape the space and add the overhead trapping.
Hi Gullfo,
Hat channels and furring strips it is!
Thank you and John for your help and suggestions.
