I'm trying to figure out the best way to setup this space for a recording studio.
Space is around 600sqft.
On second floor of building
The two exterior walls are Stone (outside)
One interior wall (without door) is Stone (outside) also but has interior steps on the other side.
Also there a baseboard heating units on both sides of the wall that connects the two rooms together.
New to using Google Sketchup :)
Thanks for any help.
Help! Studio design and layout

welcome! what are you trying to achieve with your studio? take a look at the read me before posting stickie as it has a good set of questions to answer which will help us.
I would like to have a control room and vocal room.
Studio is in a commercial building and the bathroom and closet interior walls
are connected to another business.
Also there is a business on the bottom level.
So being able to make room as quiet as possible is a must.
Thanks
very good. how much sound do you think you will be making?
Looking to use several live instruments (drums, flutes, etc.).
I will be making alot of noise.
ok, so there is another business directly below your space which would be adverse to having significant (or any?) drum sounds coming through? is the (your) floor concrete or framed? if it's concrete then it should be feasible, if its framed, it will probably be significantly harder. from a heating/cooling perspective, you're probably going with a separate unit anyways so it would probably just make sense to find out if you can cut out and cap the baseboard plumbing (most times no) or turn it off (but then it may consume some space).
The floor is framed and yeah I can not cap the baseboard heating unit (I can only cut off). Also I plan to build up a wall where the half wall is and should I have a window from control room to live room?
Thanks for the help.
i'd get rid of the half wall as shown in my drawing and use some slider doors to separate the rooms and provide visibility. the floor is going to be tough because a drum kit is massively loud and it's likely your existing structure wouldn't handle that. of course if could be very useful to make some measurements with a sound level meter to find out how much isolation you actually need.
Thanks for the info..
I cannot alter the base heating units and I have ac units in both windows.
I noticed in the pic you have them covered by a new wall but how can I build the proper wall but still have access to the ac to cool the rooms?
Also is it possible to use a window vs sliding glass doors due to the base heating units?
Thanks
can you turn the closet into an AC cold box? that could help in terms of feeding cool (and fresh) air into both rooms.
great concept but how would I make that happen?
one option might be a split unit AC to cool the closet and a pair of vent fans and small ducts to exchange the air in it. then again, if you're doing that, maybe just an air exchange in each room and a split AC unit with blowers in each room. replace the windows AC units with baffle boxes for the air exchange.
