Hi, first a bit of me. I've been in the recording industry on the semi-pro to pro for the past 15 years of bliss! :yahoo: Finally after long and striving efforts I have enough to actually have my house built from scratch and I thought that this would be the best time to actually have a true studio of my own that I wouldn't have to go out and rent others :) So here is what I would need. The obvious control room with a centered window of the studio. I would need to be able to see the people in the vocal, secondary and tertiary booth from the main window. I hate CRS that has windows to the booths on the side that you are not facing. I know.. but that's my pet peeve and my personal studio should make me happy just to sit there. I work with a c|24 PT hd accel 3. I'd need to have a good amount of rack space that would be located behind me under a producers desk/video editing desk which could be staged up a bit to give a view into the Main room. Couches or seats available also. This one is a bit tricky. Fancy yes, but since I do post production with a friend, I find it would come handy. I'd like to have a 52 flat screen that could be lifted up from a boxed that would be just in front of the Window to the Main Room once elevated from it's socket. I can't really explain it better than it would come up and down in it's vertical position from a base that would be set in between the mixing desk and the CR window, fitted snuggly on the CR to Studio room wall. Giving enough space to walk behind the mixing desk. The Studio room ( large enough to host a baby grand, or a drum kit centered in the room) that would give access to a vocal booth and two secondary booths (for the times I record bands who can't play without one an other). Two additional, non windowed booth, for amps. As it will be a new construction from the grounds up, build around (well on top) of the studio. I don't really have a preference for the size. The CR should be of a good size to fit all and have enough room for Frequency decay. I'm hoping that anyone with experience in studio designing would be able to help me with this. Reading a bit about studio constructions I'm thinking of a staggered double frame wall structure with RC 2 sockets and multy layered gypsy in two-leaf configuration. Stacked up independent concrete slabs. It's a pretty quiet neighborhood, but I'd still prefer to have as high soundproofing rating as possible. Can't be careful enough. Thanks Emmanuel Chayer.
sounds like a nice plan. i think part of the overall approach though is budget and approximate space available. both will define the design from the standpoint of room sizing and finish (commercial products only versus DIY etc). Have you looked at some of the designs John Sayers has to see if they approximate your thinking?
I've been surfing through a few of the designs but a few of those I saw had the Booths in a configurations I didn't like. IE you had the Studio window and then secondary windows on the side of the CR for the booths. Size isn't really a factor for me as long as the CR is of a good size so that the Freq decay has enough room to prevent most of the problems. And a good size Studio room for Natural reverb. Like I said, I would be building my house around the studio (on top of it but you get my drift) So what eve size the Basement (studio) would be would determine the overall width and length of the house. The only thing I forgot to say that I needed a smaller room in the back of the CR for storage and chilled computers.
ok, so you want the booths to be inside the live room and not have the booths not on either side of the CR? since it's greenfield, i'd go with a 12' deep concrete wall (poured or assembly) basement with 1200-1500ft2 which should give you a good size CR w/ machine room, plus live room plus a couple of windows booths + amp room etc. possibly having the basement floor designed with separate pads. i'd have an entry door on the exterior for load in/out as well as staircase to upstairs. i'd recommend partial in-ground to allow for egress windows + daylight (if daylight is something you prefer). separate HVAC and power conditioning. do you need a bathroom. lounge, etc? are you planning on 5.1 (or more) mixing?
That's right I don't want the Booths to be on either side of the CR, but in the Live room. One of the advantages in this is that if the booth have enough window space, and a full band are recording at once, they can all look to each others for cues and all. The bathroom I hadn't really thought about it, you just made me realize that it would be a good addition. Sofas in the back of the cr room it self, behind the producers desk or on the side, no real preference there. //edits: Right yes the 5.1 is important also.
