These days I'm producing mostly rock and pop stuff, but I used to (and still sometimes do) hip hop records, which is what I got my start in as a DJ and hip hop producer. Because of that, there's a lot of history in my old record collection, and I was wondering if there would be a way to utilize the collection as diffusion somehow. I think building a custom section on the rear wall of the control room and using all the old records would be super cool, but I wouldn't want to do it unless it would actually be effective. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks guys!
Record Collection as Diffusion?

one option would be to make a cube shelf and stack in cube with a different number of records to create what appears to be a large 2D QRD diffuser. a small edge in the front of each to make sure the records don't slip out and also are slightly angled. not sure how this would work practically, with enough distance it may be useful. a set of heavy drapes to pull over it might ultimately make it work.
Sweet, what if you turned the records to where they sleeve edge is readily readable thus removing the need to dig thru them in the event you wanted to listen?
You could adjust the depth like your boxes Glenn, prolly achieve the same effect?
yeah, that's what i was thinking too. the shelf looks awesome though! they have those shelfs at ikea for > $100 too i think, and each cube is the perfect size for a record. if i vary the depths of all the different records in the different cubes, would that work out well? would it work well from an acoustic standpoint? also, what would be the ideal height of this for maximum diffusion potential? should the shelf be sitting on the ground, or raised up? my room only has 8' high ceilings, so how tall would the ideal shelf be? thanks guys!Sweet, what if you turned the records to where they sleeve edge is readily readable thus removing the need to dig thru them in the event you wanted to listen?
i could also do a combination of the two - some parts of the cube would have the records the way your picture illustrates, and others maybe with all the spines facing out. would that make sense, acoustically?
also - what did you mean by this exactly? do the drapes go in front, or in the rear? what is their purpose? thanks!!a set of heavy drapes to pull over it might ultimately make it work.
In the event they reflect too much, having some drapes to pull over them may tone it down a bit. Plus keeps the dust off them... The reason for not stacking with the edge out was to cause small angles in each box. Depending on your taxonomical ordering system, you could group by style, artist, etc. So long as you don't try to organize in pairs of three and forming circles, or in height order alphabetically, you should be ok... :D
