Hello,
Just bought my new building and am starting construction next week on an addition on the back of it. The Stone house, an old Museum in rural N.H.,consists of 1 room that's 95X35 with 18 1/2 ft. ceilings. Floor is all hardwood and the ceiling is tin. HUGE SPACE! Comparatively that is.
Any ideas on layout??
Any ideas on acoustics??
Any idea how to heat such a large space??
Any idea who the hell would buy a 95 X 35 1 room stone building with no plumbing, heat or water???
Maybe a crazy purchase but it seemed so right at the time.
Looking to do the typical Low Budget stuff.
Kind of scared to move out of my small control room but It should be fun.

Holy sh!t man nice space. Sounds like loads of potential.
First thing you need to do is sit down and decide what you want out of it. What are you going to use it for. How many rooms are you going to want and what for each. Have a look around at some other studios< http://www.johnlsayers.com/Studio/index.htm > to help give you some ideas.
Man I'm jealous. :x Good luck!! :D
Ron
Sounds like an excellent space - are there any support beams or is the roof totally self supporting.
How many studios do you want to put in there??
cheers

Thanks for the replies. I met with a contractor today for 5 hours and feel very overwhelmed and POOR!!!
Looks like I'm going to go with 4 rooms including the Control room.
CR= 28X32X11H looking into>
Live with Hardwood=35X32X18H looking into>
Iso 1&2 both being 14X30X11H
What do you think?
Not sure if it's cool or not to say what my construction budget is on the forum. I'm sure you guys can let me know.
Thanks again,!!!!!

Sorry for the double post.
John,
The roof is free standing with no posts.
It's one Huge Empty MF of a room.

Chris : I will be visiting the kids and granddaughter in Portland, ME, in early May. I would love to visit and see that place.
Let me know
Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,
Would love to have you up. Unfortunately I am leaving for Montana at the end of this month to see my father. I won't be back in N.H. until the 3rd week in May if all goes smooth. Maybe we could find a later date as the summer unfolds.
John et all,
I have this idea to keep the control room and the iso room ceilings at 10-11 ft and have 2 second floor "chill rooms" that are 32X28X81/2. Places for bathrooms and couches and stuff. This would leave the live room ceiling at 18 1/2. Is 11ft. too low?
Chris
with the current 18 1/2' ceilings you would need a minimum of 8ft for an upstairs - less a foot in flooring and joists so you would be looking at a control room iso booth height of 10 1/2 ft?? yeah you can just make it IMO.
Thus I assume you'd have the control room and the two iso booths under the 10' ceiling and the studio full out to 18 ft. So you'd be looking at a design similar to Jo Egan's studio at the construction site:

A rough estimate would put the construction at well over $200,000??
hey don't forget the pool table room ;)
cheers

Thanks John,
Joes Studio looks amazing. Unfortunately it's design cost is wayyyyy above my budget. Maybe I should rethink my plan here. I'm running at around 65K for begining to end. Maybe thats just too many corners to cut to have it work.
Starting to freak out a bit today. Oh well, nothing a little deep breathing and a bit of single speyside malt won't take care of.
Anyway this can be done with such a budget?
Chris
If you do it ALL yourself.
You can get all the materials for much less than 65k
Got some buddies who like to look out for you :)
Throw them some bones as far as payment goes and treat them to a nice mini vacation. Send them and there wives to a SPA in Dallas. (My suggestion. LOL)
Of course this is less gear. :)
But It is doable in that price range. :)
giles117,
Thanks.
Yea, I'm planning on a lot being done by myself. And definately not including gear. I've got a beautiful studio in N.H. filled with all my dream gear already. I just wanted to know if I was biting off more than I could handle. I thought today about building a seperate structure on the back lot but then I wouldn't have the vibe of the big huge structure that makes me quiver when I'm inside it.
Guess I will push through and hope that I ca get it done before snow flies again.
Chris
It will definitely take some time. LOL. I think I spent more time figuring out HOW to do than doing.

Giles, that is THE BEST suggestion for getting buddies to help you out. Even if it's just sending their wives off somewhere while you guys work. Because the guys will almost always work for beer. At least up here in Wisconsin, they will. (exactly how much beer varies by location) But getting permission from the women is what'll make it tough. Bribing the wives first is a great tactic. I'll have to remember that one. Kase www.minemusic.netSend them and there wives to a SPA in Dallas. (My suggestion. LOL)
Hey for a lousey 500 bucks per wife for the weekend. It works for me.
