]Hello all. Back after a long absence and finally have a suitable space for a studio. I liked John's design - Small_Studio.skp -so I attempted to alter it to give me a longer control room at 12'x18'. I'm hoping that with the wall treatment in that design, ie. insulation, fabric, slat walls and traps, that it will give me what I'm looking for. If anyone could please take a quick peek and see if you have any suggestions or notice something that may create a problem, I would greatly appreciate it. I plan to use Roxul Safe n' Sound in the walls and ceiling. The ceiling will be drywall attached with channel and a cloud floated over the console. The speakers will be soffit mounted JBL 4312's which have lovely bass reproduction, so I understand that trapping and absorption of low frequencies is a priority. I have a local supplier for Green Glue, 701 or 703, and Gilford fabric. I am attaching a jpg as the Sketchup file is too large. John's design is in the lower right corner. I can post larger pics if needed. Thanks in advance. Alan

the 12x18 should be re-adjusted for a better ratio. what is the ceiling height of the space once you put in the ceiling?

I was thinking that that might be a suggestion. Do you think 12x16 with a 2 foot section across the back with hanging insulation for bass would be a good idea? The ceiling unfortunately will only give me 7'6" and there will be a HVAC main duct to be boxed in basically across the middle of the control room.

A couple of questions on that: 1) When you say 7'6", where are you measuring that? Does that mean: A) from the floor to the lowest point of the HVAC duct? B) from the floor to the underside of the joists above you? C) from the floor to the underside of the sub-floor above you? D) from the floor to the inside surface of the final inner-leaf, once the room is finished? E) something else? 2) Is that HVAC duct only for the control room? (Meaning that it does not continue on to feed any other rooms). 3) Is there any chance you can re-route that HVAC duct? It is on the worst possible place as shown. For example, could you route it along the top edge of the CR wall, or through the booth, to get to the front of the CR? Or maybe take it through the top rear of the CR, right along the rear wall? Anyway, assuming that all of those dimensions (12', 16', 7'6") are for the final inner-leaf, that's actually not a bad ratio: it's close to Louden's third best ratio, and the modal spread is fairly even. - Stuart -

Hi Stuart, Thanks for the comments. The main HVAC duct is existing and feeds rooms on the main floor. The 7'6" dimension is floor to existing ceiling in the "clear" area. I would lose about 10" of ceiling near the back of the control room when we rebuild the bulkhead. It would be a major task to try and reroute I believe. That's encouraging to know that the dimensions form a good ratio.
Why don't you just 'turn' the whole design.. make that HVAC trunk line to run through the tracking room?? Cheers, John

Thanks for the comment John. I am currently in Los Angeles visiting my daughter for a week. When I get back this weekend, I'll be revisiting the design completely. Just got online for a bit so I wanted to respond asap. I was able to pick up a new copy of Rod Gervais' book here in LA and I can sit down with my contractor to go at the build more effectively. I'm encouraged that my proposed basement studio Control Room dimensions of 16'L x 12'W x 7.5H seem to fit Louden's first ratio of 1:1.40:1.90 as shown in the book. I appreciate the feedback so far and I know that the next time I post, I will be much better prepared with a new design utilizing the concepts and solutions offered in Rod's book as well as the excellent wealth of information on this forum. So...until then...thanks again and talk with you soon. Alan
