Hello all, I'll be building a dedicated mixing and mastering room in Canberra in the coming months, but like everything I do, I want to plan it down to the last screw. Before I ask 1,001 questions, I thought it best to prepare a full 3D CAD drawing of the space to be converted in its current state. I have experience with Autocad, 3DSMAX and SolidWorks. I've seen that SketchUp is getting a lot of use by devotees of this forum, but I don't think it's best to learn yet another package, especially if it can't do any acoustic analysis. I'm actually studying mechanical engineering down here in Canberra at the moment, so I can access student versions of most software, so I'm not opposed to buying the right software package (assuming it is actually affordable). Can someone suggest a package, please? My research has uncovered CATT-Acoustic and ODEON (youch!) as well as CARA (which I've read is only suitable for enthusiasts). Any help would be greatly appreciated! :) (For the curious, I'll give a super-quick run down on the project; My main monitors are currently free-standing ATC T16, but I plan to buy Duntech Sovereign/Princess in a year or two. There will be no windows through to tracking-spaces. I'm a carpenter, so I'll be doing all the construction myself.) Best regards,
Well, if you are going to be looking for advice from this forum, it falls back to Sketchup. That is what John and the rest of the experts have settled on because of it's availability. Having used most of the packages that you mentioned, I agree that Sketchup is a bit - uh, how do I say this without being demeaning - simplistic, and it does take a whole lot of extra time to draw things that can be done quickly in a professional package. However, just like any company you will work for in the future, if that is their package, that's what you use.
Hi Bob, Thanks for your reply. Since posting earlier today, I found out that Autodesk gives educational licences of their software to students! So I am currently downloading Revit Architecture and will give that a whirl. Hopefully there will be some kind of inter-platform file format that works (hmm) and I can convert between Revit and SU. I'll keep everyone posted. Cheers!
