Hi,
My 1st post! 8)
Been reading for 2 years though. It's a very nice resource!
So... I have a small place in an office/appartment building, and I need a simple but cool
looking "studio". Right now I have to live with low level mixing. I just realised that. I dont
have the budget for room in room costruction etc. Been mixing on NS10 at low level for years
and it has worked out great actually. My last studio had an auralex room kit and I think it sucked.
My goal:
A small vibe oriented / cool looking studio in one room (27 m2)
with best possible mixing environment and focus on vocal recording in an iso booth.
Don't care about isolation to neighbours right now. Only important this is to get best possible mixing environment
with simple and not too time consuming construction. And a well isolated vocal booth.
And I want it to look as much as possible like the real deal. 8)
Please take a look at the attached pictures and my simple drawing of the room. Wish I knew sketchup but I dont.
This is what I have to work with. Been thinking like hell for a while and I figured its time to ask for some advice.
Room.pdf is the clean room with dimensions. Room-idea.pdf is my rough idea on how I'd like it to be. This is where
I need help. Please feel free to suggest changes or new ideas from scratch.
I tried to achieve a room shape in the mixing area that is ok, but damn I'm no scientist in this area..
Any thoughts?
Budget is low. And I dont have much time since business is running etc and I need to work.
I can spend $3000 on gobo's, traps, wall's, superchunks, diffusors etc.
I already have the stuff I need to build the iso booth. I think it was $1500 or so.
Door is 46db. Window is ok. (2 of them). Also have greenglue for the
drywall to the iso booth. 12 tubes and a gun to be specific.
The shape/wall angle's of the iso booth is taken from John Sayers "Small studio.skp"
In the mixing area, in my rough design, there are 2 clouds hanging from the ceiling one over mixing position, one on the back wall.
Please - Any input is welcome. I'm a bit confused over here.
What would you do to make the best of this room?
And yes, it's important that it look cool. I want to impress clients.
And yes - ONE DAY I will build myself a real studio. Not this time though.
Maybe in 5 years I hope. :blah:
Maybe it's Stupid to place the iso booth this way???
I Had one tought of placing it in the corner somewhere... hmm...
Studio will be used for everyday work with voiceovers/jingle's
and as much songwriting and music production as I can.
Voiceovers/jingle's pay the rent. Writing/producing is my passion.
Cheers

The rough design... :horse:
Room height (floor to ceiling) is 3,5m.
Personally, I would move the booth to one of the rear corners, and move the desk up to the front wall! The way you have it, I reckon you'd have some strange things going on with those huge asymmetrical cavities behind your speakers. You also have your head way too far back in the room, and too close the the rear wall/ door. I'd also replace the "diffuser" on the door with absorption, since the room isn't really large enough to benefit from diffusers. - Stuart -What would you do to make the best of this room?
Stuart,
Thanks for your reply!
Probably a good idea to move the booth to the corner. And the desk to the front wall.
I'm a little worried about room symmetry and absorption etc when the booth is in the corner.
If you got some time some day, maybe you can sketch a quick design with traps etc?
Hmm... Will try to make one new on my own as well..
Thanks!
