I would like to start a discussion on natural building techniques, how they can be used in construction of a recording studio and how they relate to acoustics.
THE BACK STORY: I am slated to begin a residency this fall on the Oregon Coast where I will be working on music I have written. The institution doesn't have a dedicated studio facility for music, or any equipment at all really. They have primarily focused on visual art in the past and are aware they need a studio of some sort for musicians. I am personally interested in natural acoustics and have focused my career around this interest by building a solar electricity generator and using it to power a laptop and 8ch interface in remote locations, using natural acoustics in my recordings. The fact that they don't have any facilities means there is a clean slate for the design and construction of one. The Center is physically located in an experimental research forest and is focused on connecting artists and nature. Needless to say they're thrilled about my desire to turn their forest into a recording studio.
MY IDEA: Ultimately, I would love the opportunity to turn the grounds of the facility into a collection of acoustically ideal spaces for future residents to use. I don't know that I will have the time to fully implement as large of a plan as that. I also have access to and enthusiasm from a leading natural builder in the area. It also rains a great deal here and forcing people I don't know out into the cold and wet just so they can work isn't the nicest thing to do or great for the equipment and instruments. So I'm thinking a dedicated space/structure for protection from the elements and a few nice settings for the nicer days is a good start on a plan.
Questions:
Does anyone know the absorption coefficient of a straw bale? Cob?
Does anyone have experience they would like to share of working with sound outside?
Any interesting designs for diffusors or absorption that can be made from materials gathered in a forest?
Natural building materials and studio construction.

At the crazy hippy festival in Tennessee called Bonaroo; Nashville studio guys build an onsite recording facility for bands to record. I have not heard the recordings but they do it while this huge festival is going on. They build it with hay bales and bring the gear in. Do not know much more beyond that. There is a youtube video with details perhaps you can find it. Good luck!
