Hey all! So glad this forum exists. I am well on the way through my first studio build. Very, very excited about this little space in my back yard. It's about 550 sq ft. Gonna be awesome. I am installing rc1 with two layers of drywall over it on a cathedral ceiling. There will be Green Glue between the two layers of drywall. My ceiling has been reinforced with 2x10's, 24" on center. I have run RC1 at 16 on center across the entire ceiling and installed a layer of 5/8 sheetrock. I plan to add another layer of 5/8 sheetrock. My father has been helping me quite a bit, and he has become concerned that the RC will not bear the load I am putting on it. Nothing additional will be hung from the RC, just the drywall. Will the ceiling fall apart?!?!?!? Should I rip it out and ad more RC???? Thanks for your input. I have scoured the interwebs and spent lots of time on the phone and so far have not been able to capture a definitive answer, perhaps someone on here with lots of RC experience can guide me. Regards. Brian Hall
Brian, the RC-1 has no spec for its construction, so there's no way to know for sure. Here in the States, we have the Steel Stud Manufacturer's Association (SSMA) that specs the construction of the various steel framing materials. Steel studs, C-channel, Drywall Furring Channel, etc are all listed, tested and specified by the SSMA. RC-1 and RC-1 are not among the products they specify. This leaves the actual fabrication and design up to the numerous individual steel fabrication companies. You can find RC that is webbed, slotted, perforated or solid. 20, 22 and 25 gauge steel. They can't all perform the same. Some will be too stiff for single drywall loads, while perhaps fine for double. Others will be better used with one sheet of drywall, and overloaded with two. With no standard, we just don't know.
