Rod, Sorry but I didn't even understand that you pronounced what was under discussion as being contrary to code. It's not that I'm discarding your advice or not listening to you- I guess I'm just having trouble keeping up with you. In fact I misunderstood you- first you laid out the information about minimums of the wall assembly, all of which our plan met. Then you followed up with a description of a specific wall type "ANSI/UL Assembly No. U307" which I misunderstood. On a second reading now I see that the optional fiberglass can be used in the stud cavity, when I guess the term I was imagining that to mean was actually the "wall cavity"? So I'm sorry there- I misunderstood you, and the feedback I was getting from everyone else involved, all of whom should presumably know more about this stuff than me, confirmed my misunderstanding of your post. So please don't take offense at my ignorance; I can't help it. I do want to know how to do this properly, and if I am armed with the right information, I can explain this to the other people involved and be convincing about it. I do not believe my architect thinks we're pulling a fast one on the inspector. I believe the architect does not know better. Same goes for the building owner. The building owner in particular is a real stand up guy and I think he believes he's doing the right thing. So our problem is one of ignorance, not bad intent.
No problem George, As I said - I will be more than happy to deal with detailing the firestop for you - just provide me a section through your walls - you can have your architect email that to me if you wish - which would not be a bad idea - architects are not studio designers by any means...........
