Gidday learned people I have come to plunder and pillage your wealth of knowledge, I am a forum virgin so please be gentle :) Quick overview, originally started out wanting a practice venue for a 5 piece rock blues band but have dabbled in a bit of recording and now want to combine the two I have a 12m by 7.5m shed that I was originally going to use one quarter for the practice room/ studio, however after reading this forum it has grown slightly I am in the planning process but have an opportunity to get some of the stud work constructed in a couple of weeks time and am in need of some feedback on my layout A basic construction overview: building a room inside a room using Johns inside out wall design, cladding walls and ceiling with 16mm and 10mm plaster boards, standard 2400mm wall heights with 140mm x 35mm ceiling Joists and yellow tonged particle board on top The house is approx 30m away from the shed, the nearest neighbor is about 40m away but I have the potential for new neighbors to be only 15m away also a main highway with B double road trains is about 60m away. Other noise considerations include the occasional glider tow plane and the steel roof on the shed when raining I am not sure exactly how loud the band is but we do not practice with a PA and the volume is set off the drummer, I have measured the outside noise, average noise seems to be 63db have had a few peaks at 73db but did not witness what caused them ( A weighted slow) I have included a few pictures of the outside and inside of the shed

looking forward to your feedback Have managed to trim down my sketchup of the studio, I apologise for the crudeness but figure it will probably change from here anyhow

howdy, just a quick one. Your ceiling rafters appear to be connecting the three rooms? you will lose all isolation. Build three seperate ceilings. design looks good otherwise Lil
Hi Lil Thanks for your reply I had planned on dropping the inside walls down a fraction and using resilient channel on the rafters to isolate the ceiling not sure how far to drop down as the rondo people will not get back to me on the profile of their material However do you think this will be sufficient isolation or will I need to go the separate ceiling route? PS really enjoyed reading your build thread, picked up some great ideas and a heap of inspiration
Search the forum for "room within a room" and "MSM", to get an idea of why you need to be fully decoupled. You should find many hours worth of fascinating reading there! - Stuart -
Hi Stuart Many thanks for your reply I have been reading this forum for some time now and have found lots of interesting and helpful info From what I had read and interpreted I thought that if the ceiling joists contacted the outside wall only (slight shorter internal walls) and you used rc to decouple the joists to the ceiling inside each room that would be enough? From your reply I am gathering this is not so or perhaps it lets down (weakest link) the room inside a room concept, with that in mind I have gone back to the drawing board and have placed separate room ceiling joists on slightly shorter inner walls and have doubled the wall into the vocals booth Am I heading in the right direction? Thanks again for your input
