Hi all! I just want to start with a big thanks to all of you on this forum! It has been a great source of knowledge for me over the past weeks and has helped immensely with my studio planning :-) Right lets get to it! I have some space in an industrial unit where i am shortly going to be setting up a studio. For the time being it will be for my own personal use, recording and mixing electronic music with some live vocals, acoustic and electric instruments. Gradually i hope to get artists in and do some producing, mastering etc. My set up will consist of a the main space, which i will be using as a control/mixing room and a small cupboard next door which I want to turn into a vocal booth. So there will be no live room in the config. I can not afford to introduce isolation in between the two rooms and it is not that vital for me at the moment. Volume is not really an issue as I will be working mainly at night (so others wont be working then) and the unit is on an industrial estate so the nearest housing is about 50-60m away. My plans so far: My initial ideas were that i need any studio construction/acoustical treatment to be movable in the future as I don't think the size of this space will contain me for more than 12-18 months. I am in the process of building some bass trap absorber panels at the moment; these will be 1200mm x 600mm panels (4'x2') with 100mm of Rocksilk RS60 (60 Kgm3) inside covered with hessian (like burlap). I am making 18 to place in the control room and vocal booth. I have strongly considering sofit mounting my monitors, but as i said they will need to be moveable and my other concern is that my monitors are active and from the info i can find people seem to be 50/50 on soffit mounting active monitors, although Kendale seems to have them happily placed! great thread by the way loved every page!! So with these materials bought my budget actually stands at £0, but i will be putting the money in the pot as I go along so more budget will become available over the next few months. I do have a sketch up file with my intended ideas, I'm new to this so it may not be the best but the internal dimensions and items around the room like the trunking, radiators, doors and the window are sized and placed correctly. The audio gear in the room is simply to get the idea of placement and is not to exact scales. (sketch up file to big but if anyone wants the file i can email it to you, unless anyone knows how to reduce the file sizes in sketch up) The Space: Control room - 4.267m (L) x 3.37m (W) x 2.68m (H) Vocal booth - 2.85m (L) x 1.58m(W) x 2.5m(H) construction: All walls are studded and covered with gypsum board and plastered. Obstructions and features: The vocal booth is bare so no obstacles or intrusions to report there. The control room has 2 radiators on the front and back walls (these being the shortest walls), there is some trunking across the length of the back wall approx 690mm from the floor for power sockets; and there is an internal window to the left of the front wall. Both rooms have false suspended ceilings (see pics); above the ceilings is a cavity of about 5 or six feet which leads to the metal cladded roof of the unit, I can get up here and have a bit more of a nose if you need more details. Questions: What do you think to the room layout? are the panels placed efficiently? Is this the right plan? My panel construction from what i can gather will work ok for bass and broadband absorption, you think? Anyone hung homemade panels from this sort of ceiling before? would you recommend building soffits for for my active Mackie HR824's?(If i do build, would like to take them with me when i go) If so, how would i best incorporate them? Slot resonators for live room and vocal booth? will this make a huge difference in my set-up?(same as last Q - movable??) Could use some help with monitor placement, listening position-38% which is recommended takes me to 1.6m into the room, which means my monitors will have to be pretty much on the front wall, moving the listening position further into the room takes me near the 50% position which i understand is bad, a load of balacing and juggling to be done here maybe…. Basically i'm just a bit up in the air with this aspect…..please help I know theres more Q's rolling around in me noggin so i will obviously post more as i go! :-) and you guys might think of some for me ;-) Hope this all makes sense and you have enough info to help me out. Big thanks in advance!

Decided to go with my layout as pictured. Worked out my monitor and panel placements so no need for answer to that Q. Decided to leave the sofits and slot wall ideas for when i get a better sized, more permanent place. Hanging panel from suspended ceiling still puzzling me, any ideas on that would be good. So i managed to build all my panels (18 of them!) in a marathon 3 day session! Joe bless the compressed air staple gun!! saviour! I will start another thread on my panel construction give a bit of insight into my ideas and methods, hopefully it will help out some of u's out there :-) time to hang panels and run some tests Any advice on things you may see wrong or could be improved on are most welcome. cheers chris.
