John, or anyone
Do you have any design ideas for CR front wall without soffit speakers?
I'm planning to do a remodel of my CR soon, since when I built my studio, I ran out of budget plus I didnt have the time to stop working anymore.
However, I'm making that time later this year, and I want to build the CR completely again. Not room in a room, just acoustic treatment, like in the other Control Room I designed .
I got the design pretty much worked out (angled slat walls, soft back wall with superchunks, and soft front wall), and even tho the front wall design I did for the other control room we are building seemed ok, I'm curious if you have any other better idea.
THanks
Javier
Design ideas for front wall with free standing spkrs

Here is a quick idea of my design.
Some comments:
Are my slat walls too narrow ? I used 12 degrees for each. Should I use 6 instead? I used 12 since they will cover almost the whole front corners. Another option could be 6 degrees each and make a superchunk in each corner (something like replacing the corner structure for typical soffit design)
Right slat wall will be built to match the actual window for the recording room (not shown)
This is the other front wall idea. 6 degrees each with a couple of superchunks
Any more ideas are more than welcome!
the last is the best Javier - superchunks or hangers in the corners. You couudl also try the 12 degrees with that format.
Well both have good and bad things.
12 degree I loose too much space, but it also has more cavity depth for lower frec absorption.
split the difference: How about 9 degrees, then? :)
Or make the slot wall a bit shorter, so it doesn't eat so far into the room.
Are you talking about your first CR? The one you competed last year? If so, then its a reasonable size room. I think you would have space to go for 12 degrees plus hangers or superchunks, or at least 10 degrees.
The trouble with 6 degrees is that you might start getting first reflections off the slats. Even 12 might not be enough. Have you figured out the RFZ geometry yet?

Yes Stuart, my Control Room.
10-12 degrees should do it then.. and a couple of superchunks in front.
I don't have any software for simulating raytracing, also it should be much more complicated because speakers fires in all directions.
John, how many degrees do you use in most of your layouts? (for each wall)
Another question.
My AC unit is mounted on my left wall, where the new slat wall will be. Obviously, the AC conduit goes to the outside world directly behind the unit. I guess I will need to seal properly that hole to not ruin the airtightness (new word? lol) of the slat wall.
In the worst case scenario, the slat wall wont perform well but the insulation thats placed inside will still absorb low frecuencies specially at the corners.
as Stuart said - try 9 degrees - OR shorten the slot dimension so 12 still works over a shorter distance.
Nice,
I will try that then
It will be fun! Specially taking the laminate floor out :horse:
Here is 12 degrees and superchunks
Ok.
Final design.
Any comments? Please? Pleaaase? Its not that bad to comment !
So, basically, in case that the image doesnt tell .
1.- 12 degrees slat walls with superchunks infront replacing what could have been soffit speakers
2.-Right slat wall built to match my existing window towards the vocal room, it will have a sort of "door" so when I'm mixing, the right slat wall is flat and even.
3.- Superchunks at back corners
4- 4 inches absorptive back wall
5- right and left back walls will be absortive, but with slats nailed OVER the cloth (kind of what Mr Lachot does) but in my case, it will serve for aesthethics and to keep the room a little more alive - less absorptive surface
looks good to me :D I suppose you put a cloud over your listening position? Don't forget to post some pictures of your construction phase :D

Thanks!
Yes, I think I'm going to build a large and thick cloud over me, with a cover on top so it can tame some standing waves in the Z axis. Even tho the entire ceiling is made of fibeglass (black, as you can see in my other build threads)
This build is going to be fun! I already have the budget, but I dont have the time!!!! I need to find 2 or 3 weeks off between albums to make this.
I'm still deciding on the color Theme tho. Not 100% sure about the blue.. maybe i'll go for softer colors with natural wood instead of blue with white slats for the "diffsorbers"
Other than that.... I might add a hidden tuned trap for my 70hz problem.
John,
What if you put a hidden tuned trap INSIDE the slot cavity??
Javier - check out the front of the control room in this studio.

Its just like mine instead he has slotted front wall. right?
No - like this
John, whats the main difference between mine? It really looks almost the same
your side slot walls extend to the front wall - mine don't, creating a bass trap in each corner.
Oh I see.
I was going to do something similar actually but i like your idea!
thanks John
