Hello all. I thought it a good idea to seek advice and ideas here if anyone is willing to join in.
I am in the early planning stages of my new studio.
I have in the past researched and converted a small welding shop into a small studio which i still use, so i am familiar with most of the basics of wall/window/door construction and the concepts laid out in the reference section of this forum.
I am not a builder or a math genius, i played guitar for a long time, then got into recording 12 years ago. I have run a commercial studio somewhat successfully for around 7 years now and it's time to get a real good room happening.
I should state i live in the north, way north. It's cold and dry in the winter, not tons of snow but moderate.
The studio will be built on a 7 acre parcel of private land with no real concerns for noise coming in or out.
My thoughts so far are to basically approach the building like a big shop with a cement slab with in floor heating, a scissor truss ceiling, 16foot walls and somewhere in the 30x50 ft neighborhood floor size.
The studio will be used mainly for recording/mixing music. I would like 1 mid sized separate room for isolation, big enough for drums but i don't intend to use it for drums most of the time and one small dry vocal booth. Mostly i want the big room and don't want to compromise it's character or quality for a bunch of small spaces.
the control room should be as large and high as it needs to be for very accurate monitoring. Plus i want it to feel spacious and have lots of natural light.
I plan to record metal bands, folk, small jazz ensemble, classical and big band jazz btw.
No air cooling as such is required but maybe some sort of circulation system.
Comments from there....?
Thanks in advance
New studio from ground up(yet another)

Onward then.
My thoughts for a vocal booth, as there is a lovely view of the mountains on the south side of the to be building, is to have the booth, mounted on that side, the floor 8 feet up the wall and shaped in a semi circle out from the wall, that or some off square design, looking into the studio and out to the mountains. The height of the booth could still be 8-10 feet depending on the angle of the trusses. I wonder how much of an issue the glass will be if not parallel. The room could be dead otherwise.
For the said, lets call it (drum booth) i am thinking of keeping the height the full 16 feet with an adjustable ceiling on some sort of pulley system, probably non reflective.
I guess what i am looking for is some direction for how to decide on dimensions for the large room, containing the drum booth, and the control room from a starting point of a 30x50 floor space. I would like the control room elevated up a few feet from the main room and am wondering if by making a 4 foot crawl space(2x6 framed) under the control room, i would be hurting myself at all other than losing height? It seems the 4 ft space under would act as a bass trap no?
I'm also considering, for an economical ceiling overall, to tar paper over the insulation (probably 703) and strap with finished pine 1x4 or 1x6 spaced..... not sure how far apart. As I understand this is an effective bass trap design and i think it will look quite cool. Thoughts?
