Hi Guys, First let me take time to thank all of you that have posted on here. This is an awesome forum. So much information!!! :D now, to my question.... I'm in the process of building my first studio. I'm gonna use my pool house. I have added some pics of my idea. can you guys give me some pointers? I would much rather make changes now than later... I have this drawing in Auto cad if anybody needs a better look at it. Thank you in advance for all your thoughts!

Firstly, your CR shape and symmetry! You absolutely must have room symmetry at the front of the room, meaning that your mix position must be on the center line down the middle of the room, with the speakers spaced equidistant from the side walls, and nothing at all interfering with the symmetry. Your desk is offset to one side, so you don't have that symmetry. Also, your front wall creates an acute angle with the left side wall, which you don't want. Both side walls should be at obtuse angles, or at the very least, right angles. Next, your door between the CR and LR is right where you need to put your front bass traps, or your speaker soffits. I'm also curious about the strange angle for the part of the wall that has the second door in that sound lock: Why the angle? Why not just have a straight 2-leaf wall there, with the leaves parallel? What do you gain by angling the doorway part of that leaf like that? Also, there seem to be multiple issues with room isolation: Everything is coupled, so I imagine that isolation between those rooms, and also between each room and the rest of the house, and also from those rooms to the outside world, just is not important at all. IS that correct? You do not need any isolation for your studio? You only have one small bass trap shown for the entire CR, yet two large ones in the LR. There are 12 corners in a room, and in the CR you only have one covered! For a small room like that I reckon you are going to need an awful lot more bass trapping. I'd suggest at least enlarging the existing one to something like the size of the ones in the LR, adding its twin in the other rear corner, doing both front corners too (unless you are going to soffit mount), then trying to get at least some of the other corners. Also, I may be wrong here since there are no dimensions for it on your plan, but it seems that your mix position is very close to the 50% point. Is that just an optical illusion? Finally, your speaker and mix position geometry don't seem to be correct: Your speaker axes seem to be intersecting in the middle of your head, instead of behind it. I'd suggest that you try to fix all of the above issues, then post an update My $0.02! - Stuart -
WOW, exactly that kind of stuff i was looking for!!! Thank you so much! Again this is my first design, so I'm sure there are tons of mistakes!! I'll go back and try to answer (or fix) the problems as soon as i get home, as i am at work right now. Thanks again! Andy
By the way, Andy, you REALLY should read the stickies before posting again! :) - Stuart -
