Hi there, I'm new to the forum. The name's Julian. I'm designing a mastering room. It's a room that is "L" shaped so I plan on putting a partition somewhere to have two rooms. One of them will be for mastering, the other for...well storage I guess. So here are my options. 19' length x 9' width x 7.5' height ---OR--- 18' length x 11' width x 7.5' height Which one would be better to work with? The height is really a problem and I don't see how I can get it higher, because this is my basement garage that I'm converting for my mastering studio, and it has concrete flooring, so it would be difficult. Should I alter these dimensions in such a way that I can achieve a cozy but good acoustic environment (which proper treatment of course) so I can master? I'm also consider a "no-desk" type design like Bob Katz's studio, so I can just have a chair and low, face-up rolling racks to minimize desk reflections. Is there a ratio to follow for a room like this? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, Julian
Welcome Julian, you need to read the posting rules at the top of the construction forum under announcements, this way, everyone has a better chance of helping you out
HI, Down load the room mode calculator/excel doc located on this site. It will show you if there are any problems with those dimensions
Hey everyone, thanks.
I'm trying to sketch something, but I'm not getting good results. Also, I don't know exactly how to read that spreadsheet.
Try using Bob Gold's calculator. Personally, I think it's a little more readable, but still not very intuitive. According to that, neither option is good, but of the two, the first one is better (19' length x 9' width x 7.5' height). As you already realized, you have a really low ceiling that is going to get even lower still, after you isolate and treat the room. You'll be lucky to end up with even 7 feet, I reckon. - Stuart -
