Ok so here's the deal. I've posted a thread awhile ago about building a new studio in my garden. Unfortunatelly the local government, doesn't want me to build anything new to my house or in my garden! There's a maximum of 75m2, and I've allready used 50m2, so an extra 50m2 wasn't allowed. Now the new idea has come up to convert my garage into a control room 5 meter x 3.10 meter. I need to reserve a space of 1 meter x 3.10 meter for some storage tho! The other space is 5.30 x 4.50 meters. I'm rebuilding that whole shed. I'm breaking it down, and will start rebuilding it from the ground up. This means I don't need to get a permit, and I have a nicely sized live room. Now my actual first concern and focus is the control room. I really need to get a place now where I can do my mixes, because currently it's a pain to mix in my kitchen, where I've got my gear now setup. Now I've come pretty far for a design, but I'm having problems seeing what I could do to the back of the room in order to get the acoustics "right". I'm also still in doubt about the wall soffit for the speakers ( viewtopic.php?f=12&t=13879 ). Is there anybody with any suggestions to this? From the outside to in it will be: bricks | air | insulation | frame 40x70mm | gypsum 18 mm | green glue | gypsum 18 mm The space that remains is: 3,62 x 2,67 x 2,50 I wish I had a bit of a bigger space, but sometimes you got deal with what you have. Atleast I have a fancy view to my garden through the window in the control / mix room. My budget just rolls along as my project goes, I'll keep a close eye on the budget, but I haven't set a target for now. Enclosed are 3 sketchups, where you can see different angles. Now my questions: 1 - To soffit mount speakers or not 2 - The setup in the front part, properly done like this? 3 - What do from the slot resonators to the back wall? Bare in mind, the door to outside will also need to be placed!

Yeah I know. I don't know why they're being difficult. I've got 1500 m2 of ground, including my house and garage 120 m2 is now build in total! You got any idea how to finish towards the back wall? I'll explain a bit more about the permits later tonight or tomorrow, I had a long extended conversation with the local government yesterday morning, about licenses.
I'd figure out the door before anything else.

Haha, yeah it in there, i've only put a door outside till now haha.. Anyhow...tonight I've got a "finished" plan, that I hope you all can shoot at and tell me if there's anything wrong with it!!
Hey guys, Here are my updated sketchups. I think this should work pretty well for acoustics in the room. The backwall is insulation with cloth stretched over it. Then the 2 corner traps are hangers on the bottom, with on top again insulation. Front soffits are build as per John's soffit design. The room isn't very big, but I think in this way, I can make it work, and make it a nice comfortable place and good mixing environment. Please let me know your thoughts, and opinions. As an example I used the Argosy Aura 260 desk. But offcourse I will create a desk by myself, since I feel the Argosy's a very overpriced for a couple pieces of MDF. @ cadesignr >> Looksie, we've got a door :yahoo:..haha

Sorry to bump this... But I'm planning on starting building upcoming month (february) on this project, so I still have some questions. I'm really curious what you guys think of the "acoustic" design? Are there also any thoughts on soffit mounting the odd-shaped KRK VXT6?

Here's an idea; detach the front and place it right on/in-to your DIY baffle. You can , if they're active, put the amp somewhere in your 19" cabinet so your soffits don't need to be cooled :)
Yeah, that might be an idea, only if I were an electrician :)... What if I would just create the standard "box", make sure the front has the perfect cutout so it's airtight, what would I need to do "empty" space that is created in the "box/soffit", fill that with insulation? I GOT A GREAT DEAL THAT I ACCEPTED WITHOUT THINKING!!!! I got 70 packs insulation ( total of 150 m2!!) for 500 euro's. And 40 MDF boards (2.44m x 1.22m) of 22mm for 700 euro's!!!!!! In the store the price would be 2100 if you would take all the sales and stuff! This saves me a lot of cash...woohooo!!! Normal these MDF boards go for 30 euro per board! And now I got lucky..only now it's up to get an extra 300m2 of gypsum, and I'm ready to build....:D...
No electrician required. Jsut extend the speaker cable. I know I'll get flak for saying this, and I've said it before, but with such a small area to begin with. I'd lighten up on the treatment. Don't just cut and paste from other rooms, do want works in your room.

Thanks for the comments. I know the space isnt large, the live room will be 5,5x4meter and there will als be a vocalbooth.i wish i had more space but unfortunatelly they're not letting me build more then i have now. While my garden is 1200 square meter, and nothing is build on it... Anyhow, ive redrawn the layout of the control room last sunday. Ill get it up here as soon as i gey back from my business trip. It feels to me that its always difficult to exactly get the right room at once, to me asan amateur, so maybe judt start light and do measurments and then add or remove whats needed..

Lilith - the smaller the room the more treatment required.
I know!~ I'd just push it forward abit. 8)

I kinda agree, but not taking the treatment out of the room, just moving it: I think that same depth of absorption might be more useful on the rear wall, than the front wall. I don't see it being much use behind the soffits, and far more use at the back, where there doesn't seem to be much. IMHO - Stuart -
I currently allready own a 3 x 4 space, which actually is pretty spacious. I've got a huge double bass kit in there, 2 4x12 cabs, 1 8x10 (these damn ampeg fridge things) and a small pa in the room for band practice. And it all fits perfectly.. So I'm actually not to worried about the control room space when I get to think of it.
About the soffits: I'm with Lilith,...I don't think extending the speaker cables between amp and speaker is going to be that difficult. I just did it (with Genelecs 1030's) and that was easy, even for me. Luckily I got my hands on the same connectors they use in the 1030's, so it will be easy to bring them back in the original state also. On the other hand, I think you're going to need a lot of craftmanship as far as cutting bezels (beazels??) for the KRK's is concerned if you intend to stick with the 5 mm max gap between bezel and speaker. (as with Thomas Barefoot's design) Just some pics to prove I did it... 8)

hey, that's pretty nifty. goed werk ;)
I've allready scheduled tomorrow to be the day of speaker experimentation. I'm gonna check if it's possible to seperate the KRK's speakers & amp...if so..I'll possibly go for the same construction you've used.. Thanks for the pics and info!!!

So you see possibilities as far as constructing a baffle for the KRK´s is concerned :?: That will be one meticulous enterprise. Looking forward to seeing that!
