I am having problems trying to fit a design in the space I am going to be building. I would appreciate any suggests anyone can make. The studio is going to be a new build in my home basement. The ceiling height are currently designed to be built at 8 feet. I have talked with my contractor about increasing the basement ceiling to 9 feet and I am waiting on the price for the addition cost. I am maxed out on the housing budget so I doubt it will be possible. I am planning on doing a lot of the studio construction myself to help with the budget. I have around $10,000 - 12,000 for materials. For the floor I plan on using an Acid stain on the concrete. I hope this will save some money and give me more height. The studio is used for mixing films (5.1) and music recording and mixing. I need the following four spaces: 1. Control Room 2. Theater / Projector Room (2 rows with 3 theater style seats in each) 3. Main Room (live) (for tracking drums, guitars and also as well recording foley. 4. Vocal booth / foley area (dead room) I will be uploading some of my thought soon for comment, Thanks again for any suggestions Greg Kraus
Please read the forum RULES that can be found at this link: viewforum.php?f=17 Please correct your initial post to conform with these rules and guidelines. Many here will not only NOT help while waiting in respect for owners and other better qualified persons to proceed, but will simply ignore these type of posts completely. You may want to immediately ask "what is it that I have missed". Trust me in that the more you know the better others can help you and that the answer to that question is in the forum rules linked page. Until then, good luck, Brien
Thanks for the advice, I have made some changes to my previous post, I hope this helps. Here are some of the original rough ideas I have came up with. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks again, Greg
Do you forsee the studio and theatre being used simultaneuosly? If so, the sound isolation will be expensive. Have you considered combining the theatre and live room into one space? This would also give you a live room with significantly better acoustics. Andre
Or at the very least get the live room a little more real estate. Two rows of seats won't need that much room. I like plan 1- but you need to utilise that area behind the back wall for bass traps. I assume your sticking to a certain ratio, which is why your not using this space?
The studio and theater will never be use simultaneously. I have considered combining them but I wanted to have more separation with the 2 spaces. I am trying to find a ratio that will work and still give me the most amount of space in the control room. If I choose plan 1 - I would use the area in the back for a bass trap. I think the design of plan 1 gives me more space in the live and dead room. The Theater room I was trying to go with a ratio of 1:1.6:2.33- which gives me close to the 7.5x12.8x18.64 (7.5x12.5x16.8). I am not opposed to cutting the size of the theater room as long as it doesn't get too small. It will be used more than the live room. I also thought of place the control room all the way to the left of the plan where the theater room is. I am just being confined by the entrance. Ultimately that was my original layout but I can't seem to get the entrance pass the bass trap. I also think the room width is getting a bit on the small side. See plan below.

Why? As far as ratios go, there are many in Cox's lists of room ratios available from the links near the bottom of this page. Andre
