Hi, new to this forum as a user but have enjoyed this site for quite some time now. I am in the process of building a jam space. Primary purpose it to play live music with a group. room size is @ (20' W x 26' L x 9' H) The room above it is a newly constructed family room. Which has a floating engineered wood floor. Under that I put ACOUSTIK™ which is recycled rubber at 3/8" thickness. Then the plywood subfloor. I am planning on 'floating' the ceiling and wrapping all duct work. But, my ultimte question is. should I fill the space between the joists with spray foam? Someone recommended using a 1/2lb foam (sound absorbing) to completely fill this space. They also mentioned there is a 2lb spray (sound reflecting). My gut tells me to apply 1 or 2 applications of the 2 lb spray foam to cover all surface area, but then to fill the space with the 1/2 lb spray foam. Any help or input would be much appreciated. Dan
"Someone recommended using a 1/2lb foam (sound absorbing) to completely fill this space." Someone who? Someone with credentials or someone who read a book that said to do this? No one here that can help you has used spray foam in a sentence that gave a positive review. Unless there was a thermal issue, outside of that, it is ineffective in the respect of how you are considering using it and it is more expensive overall.
that 'someone' was a general contractor. Is there an area on this site that shows how a ceiling should be properly constructed/insulated? Thanks so much!
Apply what you know about correctly constructing a wall for an audio room to your ceiling. "that 'someone' was a general contractor." He is an idiot who knows nothing about this area of constructing :) Please read the stickies at the start of the forums...
think rockwool!! :D

Yup! Spray foam is not a lot of use, acoustically.... (to put it politely!)
