Hi,
I just wondering what sound insulation the different kinds of outer walls have in comparison.
brick wall, concrete, clay(framework), gas concrete etc.
Or to asks differently:
is it ok to brick door openings with gas concrete or should it be massive brick wall?
Or sand filled hollow blocks?
Density of gas concrete is around 420kg/m³, bricks 1600kg/m³.

Mass is mass. Sound waves don't really care how you put it there, or how much you paid for it. All the "see" is the mass.
But what is important, is consistency. If you have a wall that is all 1,500 kg/m3 everywhere (for example), except in one place where it is only 300 kg/m3, that your isolation for the entire will be much closer to what the 300 kg part gives you, than to what the rest gives you. So if you already have mass in most of your wall, except for one part, then you need to get roughty the same mass in that part too, or else it will be the weak link.
And please read the stickies and use the "search" feature. You'll find tons of information on mass and MSM there.
Hi,
thanks for answering.
But I was unclear in formulating the question.
I was looking for concrete numbers of sound insulation of the different material used in practical buildings.
E.g. how bad is gas concrete wall really compared to a wall of bricks? 10dB, 20dB, 50dB ?
Are there some tables and comparisons?
Greetings Thomas
Here is one, it is dated about 30 years, but who isn't right? stc/ iic of wall/floor assemblies(typical construction) http://www.toolbase.org/PDF/CaseStudies ... atings.pdf This is for the stc and iic of steel framed assemblies: http://store.steelframingalliancestore. ... rclan.html Those are a few from my bookmarks @ http://buildthisroom.com/cam/STC-NRC-CAC/ So, what is "gas concrete" anyway?Hi, thanks for answering. Nice documents. Thanks! I think he's refering to Hebel style aerated concrete block. http://www.hebelaustralia.com.au/So, what is "gas concrete" anyway?
Hi,
actually I refer to http://www.xella.de/html/deu/de/ytong_produkte.php.
But this points me to another problem:
Are there any lists of translations german<->english of construction materials?
Thanks John. I still don't get it. I cannot read the language so that may not be helping me either.
But the PDF is nice.
Thanks.
