This is my first post and I have done a decent amount of reading (still have more to go). I am in the process of putting together plans for a vocal booth that I want to build. Please help me look over the framing plans I made in Sketchup. I am new to this and I want to make sure I am not going to put myself in physical danger with my framing. I live in San Diego C.A., and the room will primarily be used to record vocals/guitars although if possible I will cram a drum set in there. I will be using this to track others and not necessarily for recording myself. I'm trying to keep it under 2k. I live in a house with the closest neighbor being 60 -70 feet outside my garage across the street. Hopefully if all goes well I will be purchasing a house in about a year and a half, but for now I am stuck with building in the garage of the house I rent. So, I can't do things structurally to the garage. The garage has a cement base although I don't know how thick for sure ( it is at least 2.5- 3" thick based on the driveway it leads to). The inner dimensions of the room will be 8'L x 6'W x 7'H. These dimensions were based upon some reading and the Bob Gold calculator on the internet http://www.bobgolds.com/Mode/RoomModes.htm . This is the largest booth I can fit right now (have more room for height but not L or W). My plan is to put the booth about six inches away from the wall that is noted in the pics below (has a couch there now). My plan is to do a 2 leaf single stud system with two 5/8" OSB inside (Green Glue sandwiched) and one 5/8" OSB on the outside. All framing will have 3.5" R19 cotton insulation in between members (the kind used in BB absorbers). The walls are 24" OC while the ceiling and floor is 16" OC. I believe based on my reading I can get about 50 STC with this setup (please let me know if I am wrong). I understand that gypsum is much cheaper, but I am afraid that it will be all a waste if I move in a year and a half. My belief was that the OSB could be reused once I move (hopefully I can tear all of this down and move it). Below are details and pictures of the way I plan to frame the booth. I will not be putting in a window because of of cost, but I still need to account for HVAC. I plan on using a portable I can get used (looking at a Sharp that is supposed to go down to 38dBa) and a fan driven duct to get in fresh air (and keep air pressure normal). Please look at my pictures and let me know if what I am planning is safe and good. Like I mentioned this is the framing for now, however I will be providing a full drawing with walls, lighting, electrical, doors later. Jack

A few quick thoughts: -Forget about the floor. It won't get you any additional isolation. -Frame the ceiling 24" OC just like the walls. -You need a header above the doorway. -Use drywall for the exterior. Cheaper/easier. -Green Glue may be overkill.
Stunt: Thanks for the reply. I was going to use OSB instead of gypsum on the account of I will be moving in a little more than a year and I wanted to be able to reuse the assembly. I guess I figured that the GG and OSB could be saved and reused instead of tearing all of it apart with drywall. I wanted to use GG between the walls for added STC since I will be putting bass guitars and drums in the room. Question, can I put the wall frame assembly directly on the concrete without having to bolt/secure it to the concrete? Will any of the door hardware have to be then bolted to the concrete (i can't do this since it isn't my house). I guess I was going to build my own floor so I can secure to it directly, and since my concrete seems a little uneven (really slight like 1/16" to 1/8" slope). Is any of my thoughts flawed? Jack
Jack, I would seriously consider buying an isolation booth like a Whisper Room (prefab) unit. The reason I say this is because at least you can disassemble one of these and take it with you when you move. When you take into account the construction methods you'll need to do to be able to take it with you... it's going to take the better part of a couple of months to build it right and co$t you a good chunk of change just for the assembly hardware. Even then, it's going to take a couple of weeks to do the design (at best) and then you'll need to plan on it taking you at least a week to disassemble it when you move. All tolled, I'd guestimate that you're looking at a total of 8-12 weeks, minimum. Granted that leaves you with about 30 weeks of use, but that could easily turn out to be less than 20 if you have a full-time day gig. Either that, or you'll need to accept the fact that you're going to forgo the reuse of materials and likely only salvage some of the framing and the door, then scrap the rest... which sure seems like a shame to do... especially when you can purchase a decent iso booth that you CAN take with you, and incorporate in a new studio design should you purchase a new piece of property, where you can permanently build. Just my feeble .02 worth Max
Max: Thanks for the input, and a lot of what you say makes sense. Unfortunately those prefab units are really expensive for something like a 6x8 size, and for something that has a higher STC value it is really $$$. Never the less I am scouring the net for someone selling a used one cheap (a vocal booth.com or whisper room) that is a decent size. I have the Ron G book that I've read over the past two months, I've done some reading here, and have been planning the room build. It looks like I can build for about 2k (6x8) compared to about 10k of a booth from vocal booth.com with the same size and approximate STC value. Money is one thing, and unfortunately time is another (I know I'll need a second person). I'll look for a good sized prefab booth I can afford (used), but for the past month it has been very tough to find one that will fit the bill. I have faced the fact that I will probably be pissing some money off if I build and tear down later but it may be the way to get a quality build for less. Anyways, do you have any prefab companies you can recommend besides VocalBooth and Whisper Room? Thanks. Jack
