You always remember your first time....
Excited to find this site and have spent hours and hours digging around. I'm considering a very small studio "build out" of my utility room. Inside room dimensions are 5' x 20'. Yes 5 feet wide. Tiny. Basically, I'm looking to put my drums on one end...a small acoustic set (18" kick, FYI)...and a friend or two at the other for live jams and a little recording...stereo 2-track. No real desk or near-fields or outboard gear, etc. We play low to medium jazz/blues/spacey jams with git, bass, drums. However, the room is primarily my drum practice spot. I have no aspirations to be able to play at midnight out there. Neighbors are close on 2 sides (less than 100 feet). They seem ok with the levels outside...somewhat...at 5pm. Wife and kids say it runs all through the house. Other details. Room is on a thick pad that is an extension of our carport yet is connected to the house (boo!). Current wall construction is, from the outside, 1 layer of wood shingles/siding, 1-2 layers OSB, then 2x4 studs then NOTHING! I've filled the gaps with R-13 (mainly for temp control) and covered the studs with roofing felt (see pics). Also, I plan on adding second internal, sealed door a la the double-door concept most rooms utilize. Oh, and while a budget of $1500 or less would be nice, I'm not sure it can be done. But i'll say under $1500 to start.
Now, a few questions:
1. Would 2-3 layers of 5/8" drywall with GreenGlue in between show decent results in bring down the noise from the inside out? It certainly is mass but is the "right mass".....
2. Would there be any benefit to building a floor....hate to say floating...but I guess it is...that is not connected to the interior walls. Basically, rubber/neoprene matting on concrete with studs filled with rockwool, 2-3 sheets of OSB, carpet.
3. Based on the pics and what I've provided should I just put up some drywall, lay down some carpet and get an E-Kit?
Included is an exterior shot. And yes, the pet door has been enclosed. The interior shot should speak for itself I hope. Tiny indeed, but my bop kit fits in the corner perfectly.
Any input is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
David
A very small room with big hopes....and questions.

And yer doing fine :) Welcome, David. without having read your text (I'm lazy... skimmed through it very fast) but:You always remember your first time....
In general; yes. But it's not only the mass but the whole structure that will summing result. It's also a matter of how carefully and detailed you build it. build it wrong and get a disappointing result. Now, a few questions: 1. Dunno, read the forum and find out for yourself. (I have to read your text to give you a straight answer.. sigh) As far as I know you don't have a concrete floor right now? Xpace recently posted a link in another topic. that link will lead to an ex-sticky. John unglued it so I'm not gonna bother finding it. check recent posts of Xspace to find it. (I'm lazy) don't do carpet.... if you don't have too. keep your room "safe".2. It's a very tiny space but room enough for a drumkit. I'd say you need a single wall (might be staggered) to save space. Hang mass on both sides if possible and yes you can get away with it. Depends on neighbours, how loud you are etc.3. Based on the pics and what I've provided should I just put up some drywall, lay down some carpet and get an E-Kit?
Thanks, Ro! The more I poke around here, it seems like I may have some of this buttoned up. Sure pays to read the FAQs eh? Nonetheless, after checking out Mark's "Spark One" rooms, its very close to what I want to do....though more like his second container/room without a board and gear.
As far as the walls go, I've got the concept of inside/out...but once framed, I'm trying to figure out how thick to go at that point considering my room is 5' wide. Talk about a tube!

David
