Hello everyone, It's my first post here, but I read and learn on this forum since 2006, and it's time for me to thank you all for sharing your knowledge ! I built my first studio three years ago with little knowledge and a tight budget, and the result wasn't top of the line as you could imagine. I'm moving to a new place in a couple of weeks and I'm going to build a new studio; without the mistakes of the first one I hope. So here we go : Description : The studio will be on the garage of my house at ground level. The dimensions are (L)10m – (W)4m – (H)2,3m. There's plain concrete walls (30cm wide), concrete floor; concrete ceilling. Behind two walls of the studio there's a laundry (with toilets and coffee for the bands), and the sewing workshop of my fiancee. The house is in a residential area. The nearest neighboor is at 10m, there's a little road at 6m with very little circulation, and the nearest main road is 70m away. Goal : To make a professional recording studio with a great control room and a great live room. I record loud bands with heavy drums hitters and tube amplifiers cranked on 11. Budget : Max 20000 euros. I have two plans for now : 1/ To use the space available and adapt the great design John had proposed to lumisuto.

2/ Or I have the possibility to make an annex to the house, and I plan to put the CR on it. The budget is the same with the building of the annex included. The annex must be smaller than 20m². I cannot raise the ceilling of the annex (must be the same of the other rooms), but I can lower the floor. I prefer this solution cause the live room will be more spacy, and it allows me to record bands live comfortably. I can also add a vocal booth and a storage closet with the extra space.

So my first question is : wich solution seems the best to you and do you think the solution 2 would fit my budget ? Excuse my bad english and bad sketchup skills, please  .
Well, I'm running for the second solution if I obtain my building permit. I have two ideas for the design. I know i'm going to do it inside out, I know how to do it with the walls, but I still don't know how to keep a reasonnable height under the ceilling. This is why the designs are only two dimensionals at this moment.

First thing that sticks out: With both layouts, the door between your LR and CR is exactly where your bass trapping needs to go. You might want to move that door a bit, to make room for the trapping. - Stuart -
Are you guys talking about bass trapping or corner absorption? There is a huge different between the two.
hahahaha, X you've been seeing too much "John-TV" :) :cen: What's the difference, really? I'm sure you gonna say "bass trapping is when a low-end frequency is present in a enclosure (soffitmount etc) and needs to be trapped at the source. cornerabsorbing is to absorb low-end that's hanging around in the room itself". IMHO I'd say; It's both a non-tech term for absorbing low-end frq. so let's keep it simple.
Thanks for your replys. Well, I see plenty of studios, including some of John's designs, with a door in a back corner of the control room. The problem here is it's a load-bearing wall. I have two 1m wide windows already cut in the wall, I know there's no problem to replace one of these windows with a door, so this is what I've do in these two designs. It will take me more investigations and probably cost a lot more money to put the door in another place safety Do you think it's an acceptable compromise ?

This is the "John TV" channel my friend so there are certain criteria that I try to adhere to, that is one of them. Is there a difference? Sure there is. Sticking 703 in the corners in small triangles is more like bait when you compare that to a fully enclosed type bass "trap". Since there >is< a difference, like the difference between, say, a two leaf assembly and a four leaf assembly, it should be addressed in that manner. Otherwise, if we treat it casually, then we may as well lump the whole process into a blender and hit the spin button...whatever comes out first, let's begin the build with that :) It is just my opinion and I value my opinion, you should too :) Full of it i LA, XS
