Hi, i was just wondering if Roxul Safe n Sound 3inch http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearchResultView?D=972187&Ntt=972187&catalogId=10051&langId=-15&storeId=10051&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntx=mode+matchall&recN=112022&N=0&Ntk=P_PartNumberwould be a good alternative to OC703. i have been reading a lot but im still confused in finding some good alternatives, as they dont sell OC here in canada apparently. im just looking for good broadband insulation.
John, thank you! sure thing about the location. im going to call a few places see if they have the AFB and pick it up if so. is there a good list of other alternative batts incase i cant get it. i have found a lot info about acoustic panels that seems to conflict with with other info which is why im having a hard time finding a good alternative.
Awesome, this is great for keeping my options open, thanks John would this work aswell? Ottawa Fiber OFI-48, seems like it might be pretty good in the low end... would this work for panels (4inch)? http://www.glasscellisofab.com/sheets/glass/data_sheets/OFI%2048.pdf i find it hard to gauge how accurate the co-efficients are, i have read articles by Ethan i believe saying that they arent always accurate and to be clear, Safe n Sound isnt suitable for wall panels? even if i double up to make it 6 inch thick?
Yes - that's another equivalent. It's a rigid fiberglass.
Great, thanks again. there are a few places i can pick up what you recommended around me, i think im going to pick up a bit of each and see which sounds best. :thu:

wow - if you can hear the difference you're a better man than I am Gunga Din.
Hey Steve, Bob golds has compiled a great list of Insulation Absorption Coefficients http://www.bobgolds.com/AbsorptionCoefficients.htm There are a lot of good alternatives to OC703. John just curious about why AFB is preferred over Safe. It looks like safe has better absorption in the low end.
I suggested AFB as it's the equivalent to 703 which was the question - Safe is a rockwool, but you are correct - it appears to be slightly better in the low end.
Safe n Sound is the acoustic bargain in our part of the world. It requires more physical support than the 703 type materials, but is a fraction of the cost! Enjoy! Andre

haha, well, i dont have experience with specific absorbers, but i have read peoples experiences differed audibly in the low end even though the co-efficients are are very similar to the 703 vs equivalents. where do you guys see safe and sound better in the low end? i see 3" SafenSound is 0.52@125Hz whereas the OC703 Plain 3" is 0.53@125Hz AVare, how do you find the Safe and Sound? do you use 3 inch or do you double it up?
