remove the "third leaf" (?) or not?

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this and I'm just trying to avoid the work, so I'm going to ask. I have an interior wall that has 1/2" gypsum on one side and 1/2" plywood on the other. I am building the studio on the side where the 1/2" plywood is. Unfortunately, there is a framed second wall already constructed within 1" of the plywood side of the wall, so removing the wood is going to be difficult - doable, but difficult. Is it necessary to remove the plywood? Can I simply drill holes or cut large chunks out of the wood or does it all have to come out? Thanks in advance! Scott

When you want to have a good isolated room....YES From your post, i think you know what happens, when you have a 3 leaf wall!? But maybe also a 3 leaf wall matches your needs????????????????? You must know, what amount of isolation is needed for your room  It`s better to do the work as soon as possible. Later the work may be more difficult to do  cheers Mika
I'm with Mika, get a sawzall and cut in-between the studs to remove the plywood. You already know if the wall you are cutting into has electrical wire in it, then you be careful!

That's what I was thinking about doing. There's power in the wall, but I know where it all is. Besides, I can cut off the breakers if I'm too concerned about it.

I agree with these guys. You would have to remove so much ply to make it work, you may as well remove it all. It will certainly be worth it from an isolation perspective. Much lower LF resonance point established means much netter bass isolation
