Hi there, I am new to the forum and after searching now for about 2 hours cant find a definite answer for a question I had. (although I found plenty of other answers for many other questions!) I am planning to do a full post with proposed layout etc etc but this is just a very quick question... I have come across a very cheap source of 16mm MDF (cheaper than GIB) would I be able to use this as a first layer for my interior walls and then put a layer of GIB over that? Would that be ok or does MDF have some sort of bad resonant quality? I did see in one build someone planned to use GIB-MDF-GIB and John said that was excellent? if so I might go for that as the MDF is only about NZ$14 per sheet 2440 x 1220 x 16mm I am building on to a concrete slab (and dont plan to float floors) and my main concern is isolation of drums from the exterior world. Thanks for any help, I have a very limited time frame to pick up this deal and do understand the correct procedures for posting here and I promise to make an official start with plans etc etc when I have time to do so! Dave
Yes - you can use the MDF Dave - treat it like plaster by sealing it before you add the plaster on top.
Fantastic! Thanks John, this is a great resource!
:horse: I used OSB, but MDF should be fine. My walls from interior to exterior are; Acoustic finishes 5/8" Gypsum Green Glue 5/8" Gypsum 3/4" OSB 2x6 Wood Stud (R-19 Insulation) 1" Air Gap 2x8 Wood Stud (R-19 Insulation with 1x2 cleats holding 5/8" Gypsum to the outside) 3/4" OSB 3/4" OSB Tyvek House Wrap 3/8" Hardie Plank Concrete Siding I can't put a nail or a screw anywhere in a wall, or the ceiling without finding something solid to attach to.
I used OSB in my room but would have to think about using MDF in any kind of wall that has one side exposured to the exterior. OSB can take the deterioration but I wouldn't want MDF as a base layer, in a situation like that.
xaMdaM - that' a hell of a lot of building materials for a studio - are you building it next to a railway line or at an airport or something - it's more wall materials than a Pro Studio would consider using.

Unfortunately, my neighbor has the gun collection from hell... His collection consists of legally owned firearms from every movie since 1925. About 3-4 times a year, he has friends over and they shoot all day in the field below me.... ALL day... like 10 hours, non stop. The side arms don't bother me... its the figgin' rifle from Quigly Down Under that will drive you nuts... And besides... we're hoping that the place will be a real pro studio... As much as we've invested in the building and gear, we sure as hell hope so, anyway. :D Rod didn't help me design no junk. Of that, you can be certain.
