the home stretch is in view for the outer shell of my studio. one of the last things is adding mass to the ceiling. about 1000lbs of sistered framing and 5/8" drywall. as you can see in attached there is a large glue-lam spaning about 23'.
a structural engineer is doing the math and will get back to me on the new beam load. if the beam can't safely take the load i will be faced with a few choices.
1) install a post mid glu-lam and cut a footing in the floor.
2) remove the glu-lam and sister the existing 4x4 with a type of laminant beam (about 18' span)
frankly i think option 2 will be soo much more expensive i can't do it now. so if i run a post down...does anyone know what i can expect to sacrifice? it will run from about center ceiling down to a large concrete slab. wood post? steel post? when the inner shell comes along (before my death in theory) i will have to deal with decoupling it from the inner ceiling.
thanks
support post for outer shell
