Hello! Who we are and what we want to do: We are Jype Multanen (me) and JP Salokangas from Finland. We are going to turn our existing training place into a studio. We are beginners what comes to studio activities, but want to be good in the future (far future maybe), and maybe be able to earn by recording and mixing bands coming to our studio. We start by recording our own stuff of vocals and acoustic guitars. Later on, we preferably also record drums in the same recording room, and after that also loud guitar and bass cabinets in the same or another room. We are willing to spend much money if it is necessary to get very good quality of recording and listening to it in the control room. If possible, we would first rather spend only the money required for recording vocs + acoustic guitars, and later "upgrade to drum-ability". I find it appropriate to post already, even when not understood 100 % of what has already been discussed in this forum., since we need some initial guidance and support  What we have: The existing training place, sketched in the attached figure, is a one-floor outbuilding on the countryside in the town of Kirkkonummi in Southern Finland. The music escaping to outside will not disturb neighbours etc. From outside, there are no other noise factors than wind, and very seldom a car or tractor driving near-by. In addition to this room, the outbuilding has another bigger warehouse room (behind the door-containing back wall of the sketch), but is not meant to be part of the studio. The first steps we are trying to build are the dividing of the existing room into recording + control rooms, and making their acoustic a good start. The existing materials and thicknesses of wall+ceiling+floor are as follows: - Walls (except the two windows on the right-hand-side-wall): 1. 10 mm drywall layer (innermost) 2. ca 110 mm insulating wool 3. Outer wall (including probably a thin "Windshield board" + " a normal wooden wall") Do the materials of the outer walls affect the acoustics of future recording room or the isolating of control room from the noise of recording room? To the inside walls, we are going to put bass traps to each corner, and acoustic panels (100 mm thick insulating wool in 60 cm x 120 cm wood frames) attached so that they are 5 cm apart from the innermost wall. In front of one of the back wall in the playing room, we plan to place a shelf/storage system for cables etc. To the planned wall between control and playing room: discussed later.. - Roof/Ceiling: 1. 10 mm drywall board (innermost) 2. Don't know the structure of the outer roof and the space in between. Must I find out? Does it affect the isolating of control room from the recording room? 3. Planned to install similar acoustic panels to the ceiling as to the walls. We understand that panels must be behind, above and beside the singer/acoustic guitar player because of microphone orientation and echo. - Floor: (The floor of the recording room has previously been made floating due to temperature and moisture factors, not acoustics) 1. Concrete 2. upon concrete, 10 mm foamed plastic sheets 3. upon, pallets, adding 140 mm distance to the floor and making it floating (at the moment only where shown in sketch) 4. 22 mm particle board / chipboard 5. 20 mm foamed plastic sheets with "hairy surface" (didn't find an English translation to this.. :? ) The 1. step: dividing of the room to control room and recording room: Here is what we have thought of doing so far: 1. Build a middle wall on the concrete, right left from the planned playing room. Whether just a straight-forward wall giving 2 rooms or something else, we don't know yet. The middle wall would be constructed from vertical 2x4 studs attached to horizontal studs in the ceiling and floor. Probably then 2 leaves with the air gap given by the depth of 2x4 stud. Each of the leaf would be eg. thick drywood plate layer + an insulating wool layer. 2. Float the floor of the control room as already done in the planned playing room. Maybe not necessary, but does it make things worse? More comfortable for us and easy to do. 3. Build floating wall to the wall on the right (against the new middle wall planned to build on concrete) 4. Build the door from control room to playing room (not yet studied how to do it) 5. Maybe also a window, if we are able to. Some questions: - Is it ok to leave the door-wall (back of the sketch) and outer wall (left of the sketch) of the control room without floating walls or other extra structures, or are they required in each wall? I mean, would the sound from recording room travel through those structures into the control room? - Is it ok how we planned to construct the middle wall upon concrete, with 2x4 studs and 2 leaves with 2 layers both and air gap between? What are your further suggestions? - Would it cause big problems, that the recording room would then be a square of 4,5m x 4,5m square? Or should we rather, instead of a direct middle wall, build a partly diagonal middle wall, eg. starting right from the door and ending at the rest of the middle wall at 1-2 m from the back wall (in the sketch not drawn). Or rather just construct some inner walls or such structures to the recording room? - Or even divide the planned control room to a smaller control room + a small entry room with doors outside + control room + recording room? We have not yet studied the building of good doors. But right now, we would start by building the middle wall(s), or just getting our thoughts further in planning it. We would be grateful for any assistance at the moment! many thanks in advance.. -Jype (Southern Finland)
