Is there an ideal shape for a drum booth? I'm planning on building a drum booth inside my 2 car garage using a 2-leaf room-within-a-room design. I have about 10' W X 20' L X 9' H to work with, but I was planning on using the 1st Sepmeyer ratio as a guide of the booth size which would be about 10' W X 12' L X 8.75' H. Is it wise to use Sepmeyer as a guide or should I use the Golden Ratio or Louden's numbers? Of course parallel walls are a bad thing, but how would that relate to Sepmeyer or other ratios?
I will be treating the room with various RealTrap-like bass traps knowing that since the booth will be small it will be best dead...
Should the rigid ceiling of the booth be straight across or should it be peaked or hexagonal /--\? If peaked I would place an absorber to battle off a focusing effect...
Many thanks,

Ideal shape for a drum booth?

Ideally, rectangles are your base starting point for building rooms, period. Look around your home and see if this isn't so. The acoustic advantages have been known for many decades. As far as using a known ratio, take the first one you come to that fits and use it. People bang their heads against the walls over this detail and lose sight of the bigger picture. These ratios were based on rooms having 1500 cubic feet of room volume, roughly 12 by 14 with a 9 foot tall ceiling, for example. Height of room is important and volume is important. In the absence of both it is at least advisable to use a rectangular room, based on what ever method suits your notion. In such small rooms ratios mean less because the energy field is right in your face, or your ears rather ;) You have already maintained that this will be a dead room, so you >could< make a square room! I'm kidding, but you could and who would know if the reflections are pulled completely out of it anyway right? Once you have established which method you are going to use, again, do not be concerned with parallel walls. Most are building all types of rooms never even take the ceiling and floor parallel surfaces into account. So parallel must not be a bad thing, it's just an annoying thing removing flutter echo. You can splay your walls in effort to reduce this effect OR you can treat the walls if you build a rectangular structure. It's either or.Is there an ideal shape for a drum booth?
