How would you, or could you, calculate room modes for two rooms that are adjacent from each other but open by a passageway? After losing several of the homes I've been looking to buy to investment groups offering full cash deals I have found a new home that I have submitted an offer on and this time my chances are looking slightly better for sealing the deal. The problem is that it is a smaller home. I would be forced to use the living room as the drum tracking location. Less than ideal but I've learned I need to make compromises in my home search. The living room is also open to the kitchen and dining area by way of a 36"x8' passageway. The living room is 12'x16' and the combined dining and kitchen dimensions are 24'x31'. I will see if I can get a picture up later tonight in case this is confusing anyone. BTW, the room I would be using as a control room is 10'x10'x8' so I will be back to address the issues of that room if I can close on the home.

Short answer, you don't bother. Further, mode calculations are used only when designing a new room when you have the chance to build or move walls. If this is an existing room that you plan to leave as is, then a mode calculation is moot and academic at best. All you can do is treat it properly with bass traps etc.

Ouch, that's really small and also square. Can you use the living room? --Ethan
I'm afraid that wouldn't be an option as well as slightly counterproductive when it comes to trying to hear what the mic positions are really giving me in the way tones. I'm currently stuck in a position where my recording room is also my mixing room and while I'm slowly adjusting and learning the lies that my ears are hearing its proven to be a real inconvenience. There is a room further down the hall but it isn't much bigger 10'Wx11'Lx8'H. I suppose it would offer better isolation from the where the drums would be tracking at but it is right next to the master bedroom. Not that I care too much but I was trying to be somewhat respectful to the little lady. I think she would be happy as long as I saved her a room to play with her scrapbook supplies though.
