Hey guys I've been reading this forum for a while and i'm finally gonna start the process of building a studio. The space I'm using is 30ft x 15ft. The ceiling is slanting from 25ft to 20 ft as shown on the sketchup model ( i apologize, I suck at sketchup). Basically I wanna build a control room, a drum booth, live room in between the two and a loft above the control room. I mean since the ceiling is so high might as well take advantage of it. I will be using the booth for drums, vox, and for guitar cabs. I want the live room for both full band set up for pre-production and for room mics for the drums. It is made out of thick concrete blocks, then insulated with another layer of concrete over that. It'll be pretty loud but the guy i'm renting from says it's not a problem. Let me know what you guys think and or how I should go about doing it. Thanks! --Justin

That's a nice space you have Justin - you can adequately fit a control room, live room and drum booth in that space. The question you have to start asking yourself is how do I want to access the upstairs over the control room. The obvious is to add a staircase in the studio, solved, or is it? what if you are recording a friends arrive and want to go upstairs? do you stop the recording session and let them tromp through the studio, tripping on mike cables etc? My advice would be to move the control room to the right and put a door in the bottom left corner that allows for a staircase up. The staircase could dog-leg over a lower ceiling-ed vox booth - to rise to 12ft requires a long staircase.
Yeah the idea i had was to have like a lean ladder like on bunk beds up to it instead of stairs. Still working it out but that was my idea.
hey do you guys think that building that room above the control room is gonna to much of a daunting task or if i do my research do you think it is pretty feasible? --Justin
Can you access the "loft" from out side? What will go in it? an office, bedroom, what about an amp room? But your right it is daunting. It wont be a DIY job.
Just trying to expand the space for the band to be in. Since its a small space sq ft wise i thought adding that room would add like a hang out room with tv and play station and shit. I was gonna put the cab in the booth when i did guitars. Theres no entry to the top from outside. I was thinking I could just make or by a lean ladder that went up through the control room ceiling. The guy I'm renting from actually had a second floor there and tore it down a week before I saw it hah. He said he would help me put it up If i did it.
how about a fireman's pole into the rear of the control room and a ladder up :)
hahah thats definitely happening!
