Location over on the left! Building, as currently planned, is roughly 30x31 on the outside. I met with my builder today to discuss the HVAC thing more. He suggested using Mini Splits in the CR, LR, and office, etc. The documentation that I have says the following on them: Fan Type - Cross flow fan RLA - 0.152 MCA - 0.56 Airflow, (CFM) (H/M/L) - 353/312/271 Sound levels (db(A)), (H/M/L) - 43/40/39 Temperature control range - 61F - 86F http://www.comfortstarusa.com/US_MiniSplits.asp A lot this stuff is just greek to me but I wanted to get some opinions on these units. He said it was an option for going ductless so sound couldn't travel from room to room through the ducts. He also said we could go the traditional approach with over-sized ducts. CR Dimensions - 12 x 13 2/3 x 16 2/3 LR Dimensions - 12 x 13 2/3 x 19ish (maybe; this isn't firm yet. I'd prefer 12 x 16 4/5 x 22 4/5 Office - 11 x 11 I'll also have an ISO booth and a restroom in the building. Sizes on those are not yet firm but I think 9 x 6 x 8 is roughly my ISO booth size unless someone see's issue with this. FWIW, I have Rod's book as reference...although I understand very little about the HVAC stuff in it at all. :!:
I have a mini split and they are very cool. The only thing I dont know for sure if they actually exchange air from the outside or just cool down the inside air
Yeah, I actually searched for the wrong thing before I posted this thread. It didn't dawn on me to search for mini split until after the fact. There is quite a bit of information surrounding the mini-split stuff on here, which is cool. But I do have a few questions about HVAC methods, in general. Specifically, I'm pretty flexible as to what I can do. I can go with insulated flex duct or a mini split. Which should I do, though? Which would cool and heat more efficiently? And more importantly, which would be more quiet? Also, wouldn't insulated flex duct transfer sound between the rooms? I know that I need high volume and low velocity and that sags in flex duct create higher velocity. But if the flex duct was installed without sags, would it be efficient? I was talking to my builder tonight and he said that they typically run a main duct down the building and then have ducts lead off of that main one into the rooms. I have the ability to specify that these all be over-sized ducts. I bet I could specify no sagging as well. Also, with the flex duct, without sagging, should I also build silencers to be installed? I would need a silencer at every room, right? How many air entry points would I need? Just one large one? What about returns to cycle the air out? THIS IS ALL SO CONFUSING!!!

a mini-split sytem cools /or heats the air in a room - It does NOT add fresh air to sthe system so considering that a soundproof studio is an airtight studio if fresh air isn't added you will die. of course people use them all the time as they open and close doors and windows in their houses to add the fresh air. For a sealed system you need a heat pump. here is a typical Heat Pump.

It consists of a fan and coil unit and an outdoor compressor unit. It's just like a split system except it is mounted in the ceiling and the air is fed via ducts into the room. It also allows for the addition of fresh air (15 - 25%) plus it is quiet as the unit is away from the room. Here's a typical ceiling installation of a heat pump unit. The flexible ducts are insulated (thus quiet).

The outside unit and the inner fan unit are connected with pipes that carry coolent just like a split system. They are the black pipes in the above picture - the white pipes are for getting rid of excess condensation water.
