I am building a double wall with steel studs, 5/8" drywall on each outer face. I am unsure of what type of insulation to use as well as how to connect it to the walls since I can't staple it in like wood studs. Also does it matter if the insulation is the kind that's wrapped in plastic, because I want to avoid it getting in the air as much as possible. I have searched the forums and just can't find an answer. I would appreciate if someone could give me some advice. Thanks
:horse: I don't think you have read the forum?
I have read the forum, I have found a lot of talk of using mineral wool, but that will not be a option for me. There are many articles about insulation, but none that explained how I should attach it for steel stud construction or that specifically said it was okay to use plastic wrapped insulation, so could someone else still help me out? Thanks
I have read the forum,
... except for the most important part, it seems! :) There is an announcement at the top of the forum about what to do to assure getting as many responses as possible. The announcement leads to this post (click here). Actually, several people, who are experts on this forum, will not reply if you don't do what is written in that post. Many others who are very helpful, will not reply out of respect for the moderators' wishes. Your question cannot be answered, for the simple reason that you didn't provide any explanation at all about what you are trying to do, what type of insulation you actually plan to use (seeing that you don't like mineral wool), what type of construction you are using, what your golas are, etc, etc, etc.
Morden, its much easier than you think. Just use normal insulation (48kg/m3) either in panels or fluffy ones. Then you can hold them by using a small wire across the studs so it keeps it together. Its not recommendable to use those plastic insulations, its better rough.. Btw, I think he was pretty clear about his question. He doesnt have to write a 2 page introduction to just ask how to hold insulation between the studs. Also the search function its pretty odd since most important words are censored or too "common". So searching the forum isnt easy at all. And third, I kind of think this forum has lost its original "magic", dunno how to explain it but before all people used to help each other and even come up with sketches of new ideas. I know most of questions are being asked several times but this is going to a point to that most questions are ignored, if that the case why not just close down the forum and leave it like a information source? Anyway, I'm going to help if I can (or have the answer) Dont have a problem. indeed, I wish other do that as well (Like you Stuart, I appreciate your effort to help almost everyone) but the rest is like "hey, I built my studio so good-bye) Cheers
Mordent - insulation is typically cut into pieces or rolls slightly wider than the stud spacing. That allows you to jam the insulation between the studs and it stays there on it's own.
thanks a lot everyone, i appreciate the help.
