Hi, I plan to build commercial recording studio in Brno, Czech Republic very soon. I will build this studio in the barn. Main use of the studio will be for commercial recording.
Barn is separate from neighborhoods; there is no one in the range of 50 meters. The only issue with the outside noise is ultra light plains from the nearby sporty airport.
The space is separated in to 2 parts:
1. Part - Studio – part of the barn it self
The space which is available for studio construction is 9mx10m. High of the walls: 4m up to the wall bearn. High of the roof is 4 m. Total height is 8 meters. Floor – concrete in very bad condition – old and new patches made from different material at different time. Floor is on ground level without any cellar.
Roof – wooden saddle roof with roofing tiles.
Barn has 2 entrances with steel gates 3,5 x 4m. I will build plasterboard wall 100 mm thick 2x15mm plasterboard and insulation
The walls with gates are the outside walls. Those are 60cm thick. Inside walls between facility part and next part of the barn are 30cm thick. All walls are made out of bricks.
2. Part - facilities:
This part is already built in the barn. This is 80 sqm. Construction is done from bricks. I will do only necessary reconstructions here to get bar, office, rest room etc. I plan to do mastering room in this part in the future.
I will build my studio in 3 phases as I have fixed budget for the first part – 25 000 USD. I will work on it mainly myself and I plan to use part of the budget for part time workers (either specialists or manual workers).
Phase 1: control room and main room (studio A)
Phase 2: studio B and vocal booth
Phase3: mastering room, bar and sleeping room for guests
I might do changes in the continuity of the phases based on your recommendation but remember my budget is fixed.
See enclosed layout of my studio. I have local architect working on the studio design.
Studio:
I will build new main entrances in the area of the steel gates (in the plasterboard wall) and I will use second gate as an entrance for oversized objects. This will enable me to move oversized equipment directly to the Studio A.
I will do thermal insulation on the outside walls to ensure that this will be cover for winter time. This is under calculation 100 mm should be enough.
Walls: All the inside walls will be made as 2x15mm plasterboard each side of staggered steel stud with 100mm insulation, this will give me STC rating 58Db. I have not decided yet if I will use something like Green glue or if I will only screw the plasterboards together – this is based on my financial situation.
Floor: I will build floating timber floor – as describe at SAE institute guide.
Ceiling: 2x 15 mm plasterboards and 100mm insulation
Glass window between the rooms is glued glass 1x10mm and 1x8mm
Between studios A and B I plan to build both window and glass door. I plan to build glass door to the vocal booth.
Control room:
Size 5,7 x 4,7 x 4m height. I plan to do acoustic hangers at the back part and under the ceilings. I will do slot resonators on both sides behind the sofa at the back part.
Studio A:
Size 5,1 x 6,3 m, min. height 4m max., height 8m. Ceiling will copy the roof construction. I will do slot resonators in the walls there is no window.
Studio B:
I plan to use this for drums. Size 4,8m x 2,9m x 4m height. Back side wall made out of stone and Slot resonator, side wall slot resonator, other 2 walls are mainly glass.
Vocal Booth:
Size 3,6m x 2,3m x 2,5 m height. Slot resonators and spiky foam on the ceiling.
Gear
Mixing console ATB Toft audio 24, Motu 24I/O sound card, KRK V8 series2 from he main ones.
Timetable
I want to begin 1.5.2009 and finish the control room 1.7.2009
Questions:
I have studied web but I am still not sure about below topics.
1. Geometry of control room
a) I have found the “Room mode calculator” to find out the standing waves. But I do not know which dimensions to use for the calculation as none of the walls is symmetric. Please advice.
b) Separating reverberation in the room – I know that the bounce of the noise out of the wall is necessary to get over the limit of 20 milliseconds, so the reverberated noise will not get mixed with the noise from monitors. How I should design my control room to be sure that this rule will be applied? Could you please explain me the rules.
2. Mounting of speakers. I would like to soffit the speakers in to the wall. I have seen the most common used picture. See enclosed.
I know that the box for monitor should be “tight fit”. But I would like to ask about the outside construction, what is the minimum deep of the construction, compare to the deep of the monitors? What is the minimum space on the sides of the monitor, compare to the size of the monitor? I wonder if there are any rules regarding the size of the monitors and the size of the outside construction. Is there any rule regarding volume in cubic meters?
What is the construction height of the monitors? Is 1,2m low edge or the tweeter, I read that the tweeter should be in the ears level? If this is true, so the low edge should be 1,2 m (what I expect is head of sitting person), is it necessary to lean the monitor in case? I would say that the difference is about 0,3 m – does this make any difference?
Air-conditioning of the monitors goes twice via insulation; does it mean that the insulation is made in layers so the air can flow through?
3. Studio A main room – is about the feeling . I can use the height of the barn and built the main room with max height 8 meters (4 meters on the side of outside walls). I believe that this will made difference to the acoustic feeling of the room. Is this true?
4. Studio B. I plan to use this for drum recording. Ceiling height is 4m. I will use stone wall as diffuser to ensure life acoustic of the room. I might build hang ceiling and place acoustic hangers in between the ceilings – is this efficient? I am afraid to loose the “life” of the room (noise will be suppressed).
I will apreciate you recomendations.

Welcome Rabito,
wow......this does look like a serious studio, I need to study it some more, though from the build times I have seen myself and on this site I would estimate 2010/2011 at the earliest.... you do indeed have a great deal to do, have your grabbed the great studio handbook - by Mr. Everest (Sic) raved about on this website, I would start looking through all the stickies and reading up on particular room modes that fit your size and wait for a more experience studio boffin to come along for help. until then, hang in there,
Cheers
