Hey everyone, after about a month of research on this board and months of research on AVS(a home theatre board-helps with acoustic/soundproofing concepts), I think I am ready to to start framing. My goal is to build a room that I can play my drums in the basement and not disturb my grandparents on the first floor. I have zero desire the prevent sound from being transmitted to other rooms on my basement floor. Eventually it may become a jam room for a typical 5pc. band. P.S. I'm loud, :shot:
Current State
-No construction has been done.
-Basement room
-1 Window
-1 Obstruction-drain pipe
Plans
- Desired Room Dimensions: approx. 19.5' L x 10.5' W x 7' H
- Floor: Delta FL(vapor barrier), OSB on top, Carpet over OSB
- Framing: 2x4 studs framed over the osb
- Wall Construction: Not sure what to do here. I have a general idea of what to do but I can't decide on whether or not to build inside-out walls or not. I tried searching but "inside" and "out" are too common and it won't let me search them. I like the idea of inside walls because it seems easier/more effective for acoustical treatment but I'm not sure if this is the right path, any suggestions? I also planned on framing 1-2" away from the foundation walls, so if I do inside-out walls the air-gap is 3.5" less, is that a concern on walls next to the foundation?
-Ceiling: 2x6 joists attached to the new room's frame/not coupled to the existing frame; approx. 1" lower that existing joists. 1- layer Gypsum board between existing joists/ insulation/ 2 layers of gypsum or plywood attached to new joists.
-Budget- Next to nothing? haha, seriously my budget would probably be around $1000. However, studs or anything electrical I can get for free.
-Acoustical treatment: I guess I really can plan that until I decide whether or not to do my walls inside out or not.
Questions
1. Would you recommend that I construct my walls inside-out out or normal ways?
2. Does this form of ceiling seem effective?
3. Do you see any flaws in my plan?
EDIT: I plan to attach the top plate of the walls to the existing joists with dc-04 clips, b/c otherwise they would be floating walls

Okay guys I've been going crazy!!! I've read almost every build thread I could find and have learned a great deal, but I am still confused. I recently decided that my basement studio would be more useful for recording than a practice area. I have been playing with the small space I have in sketchup but I dont think I have enough room for a large enough control room. The ceiling height is only 86" from concrete to joist. I would prefer for the live room to be as large as possible. Basically what I am asking, is if it is even worth it to have a control room in such a small place? The dimensions I cam up with would be something like 7ftH x 7ftW x 9ftL, and those seem like terrible dimensions. For the live room, I was planning for approx 7ftH x 10ftW x 14ftL.
So in summary, if you had this space to work with, would you build a two room studio(live+control), or just a one room? By the way, the live room would have to be on the left side of the plan.
In my opinion, no.Basically what I am asking, is if it is even worth it to have a control room in such a small place?
