This question is kind of off-topic, as it is not directly part of my studio build, but rather my bathroom build. However, the bathroom build is holding up my studio build, so I guess that makes it kind of on-topic, almost??? :) What is the best method for patching Tyvek? I'm replacing the window in the bathroom with a different size and shape. I have the siding off, the old window out, the new window framed on the inside of the wall, and I'm ready to cut back the Tyvek, cut out the old plywood, install the new plywood, then do ... what???... with the Tyvek? Can I just cut a large new piece, say a few feet bigger than the hole, and tape it in place over the old stuff with duct tape or some such? Glue it? Just staple it? Or do I need to do the entire wall again, with new Tyvek? To give you an idea, the old window was 100 cm (W) by 50 (H). The new one is 60 (W) by 80 (H). Brien? Ro? Anyone? Help!!! - Stuart -
Tyvek makes a special tape to patch their product and has instructions on their website. I just finished installing it on my garage and it's easy.

A good diagram of how to do it their way. http://www.smithphillips.net/pdf%20file ... nstall.pdf I install any new house wrap pieces >under< the existing house wrap rather than on top of. Then nail as usual. Some joints will require taping depending on the situation. Where any good sticky tape will do the job, it is preferable to lean on the manufacturers products unless you can match the tape with one that will maintain integrity and remain in place for the expected time period to fulfill warranty obligations. Especially around penetrations in exterior walls.
Thanks guys! Much appreciated. I'm looking all over the web sites for the places I know of here in Chile that carry Tyvek, and they don't seem to stock the tape! I'll call them tomorrow and ask, but I've never seen it here (hence the question). I have a feeling that I'm out of luck on that. Any suggestions of a substitute? I'll certainly use your tip, Brien, and stick the new stuff under the old. I hadn't thought of that, but it makes a lot of sense! Thanks for the link to the installation document, too. Very useful info. - Stuart -
